Xbox has been on a roll lately, with smashing hits such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, among others being listed in its rather eventful year of 2025. In a rather intriguing blog post, Xbox has subtly teased Hollow Knight: Silksong, which might soon be ready for a global release.
While the Xbox Wire post goes into great detail about upcoming titles, it fails to mention a concrete release date for most – including Silksong, which is arguably the most anticipated title on the list.
Xbox teases Hollow Knight: Silksong for Game Pass

As detailed within the rather lengthy Xbox Wire official blog post, (dated today, March 18, 2025) Xbox is all set to celebrate games developed by independent developers at the Game Developers Conference (GDC).
The post also goes into detail about the inception of the ID@Xbox program back in 2013, which has since grown massively to support independent developers all around the world. In fact, Xbox has managed to pay out a staggering $5+ billion dollars worldwide to independent creators, assisting them in their dreams of creating indies that aim to redefine the industry and take gamers back to a time when gaming was actually innovative and fun.
Hollow Knight: Silksong was also featured in this post, albeit in a rather subtle manner – simply having a small dedicated footnote about it near the first half. The footnote confirms that Silksong is indeed part of Xbox’s ‘Play Anywhere’ lineup, and is still in active development. However, it fails to mention a release date or, even a teaser of any kind.

This is quite disheartening news for fans of the series, and given how many years it has been since the release of the critically acclaimed and beloved Hollow Knight, one would at least expect a proper teaser of sorts by now.
For the uninitiated, Hollow Knight: Silksong is the long-awaited sequel to 2017’s Hollow Knight – an indie masterpiece that went on to receive numerous awards and has been a fan favorite since. Team Cherry’s Metroidvania sequel was originally planned as DLC for the first game, before ultimately growing on to become an independent title of its own.
The game features a massive scope and upgrades in almost every way possible, and it will be interesting to see how well it lives up to the hype, when it actually releases.
Game Pass brings with it great value but at the cost of true ownership
There is no doubt that Xbox Game Pass brings with it an enormous value proposition – after all, it is the dominant game subscription service on the market currently. Much of this can be attributed to its low entry price and an impressive selection of both indie and AAA games that usually come with day-one releases.
However, this comes at the cost of true ownership – subscribers do not own any version of the game, after all. Players have access to the library until Xbox deems it necessary to remove a game (which they have done so in the past).
While digital licenses from storefronts such as Steam are equally restrictive, there exist certain benefits to actually owning a game – the most notable of which would be the fact that they remain in your library for download forever, at least until the servers stay online.
