‘Worst version ever’ fume fans after ‘horrendous’ rendition of Ireland’s Call before Italy clash in Six Nations

FANS dubbed the performance of Ireland’s Call before the Six Nations clash against Italy as “the worst I’ve ever heard”.

Prior to curtain-closer at the Stadio Olimpico, the Irish anthem was performed by an Italian opera singer.

And while fans were impressed by Cian Ducrot’s performance of the anthems against France in Dublin, the same was not the case in Rome.

One said: “Ireland should lodge a complaint for that terrible rendition of Ireland’s call.”

A second posted: “That might be the worst version of Ireland’s Call I have ever heard.”

A third commented: “Couldn’t even recognize it was Ireland’s Call… horrendous.”

A fourth joked: “this is an ireland’s call i won’t answer 🙉

A fifth said: “No harm to the lassie singing but that has to be the worst rendition of Ireland’s call I’ve ever heard…”

It was the last appearance in an Ireland jersey for both Peter O’Mahony and Conor Murray, both of whom are retiring at the end of the Six Nations.

This led to one fan remarking: “It’ll certainly be a memorable last Ireland’s Call for the pair of them considering the Italian’s went full acapella on it.

“It really was something else!”

To be fair to the opera singer, some of it may have come down to nerves, with even Cian Ducrot admitting to being nervous before his own performance.

The Grammy Award-winning Irish singer sang all three of Amhran na bhFiann, Ireland’s Call, and La Marseillaise before the Six Nations clash at the Aviva Stadium.

The Corkman, 27, earned largely positive reviews from fans on social media for his performance.

However, he revealed on the Late Late Show that he was secretly very nervous and had to relearn all of the words.

Ducrot – who is half French through his mum – said: “I butchered the French one according to the reviews.

“It was amazing.

“It was definitely the most nervous I have ever been.

“I realised that I thought I knew the anthems until I searched up the lyrics and realised I was singing them all wrong.

“I had to unlearn the anthems and then I had to relearn the anthems.

“There was a lot of learning to be done.”
