Weather update: Latest cold front to affect these provinces

The first significant cold front of June is expected to bring a temperature drop in many parts of the country later in the week.

Provinces affected include Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and the North West. The cold front is expected to bring cooler temperatures, with daytime temperatures dropping to the 12-17°C range in some areas, according to AccuWeather.

Last month, the country experienced its first major cold front of the year, and it seems that cold, icy weather will be typical in June.

When can we expect another cold Front?

Temperatures are anticipated to drop significantly starting Thursday. The forecast for Johannesburg predicts a minimum temperature of 5°C and a high of 15°C on Thursday. Similar temperatures are expected on Friday and Saturday, with maximums lingering in the mid-teens throughout next weekend.

Here are some tips from The Conversation on how to stay warm and safe during the cold front:

  • Limit your time outdoors, where possible.
  • Dress warmly (thermal clothing, jerseys and closed shoes) and cover up exposed skin to reduce the risk of hypothermia.
  • Close windows and even use thicker curtains in the winter evenings to keep in the heat.
  • Identify and close gaps in doorways and window frames that could be letting in the cold.
  • Insulate homes and buildings to reduce the need for heating and retain any heat generated between loadshedding.
  • Intensify your physical activity.
  • Invest in some extra and thicker blankets.
  • Stay informed about the latest loadshedding schedules to ensure you can cook warm meals while the power is on.
  • Stay informed and monitor the local media about the latest weather updates and warnings.
