“We never saw him on set”: Will Taylor Sheridan’s This Mistake Doom the Promising Ending of 1923 Season 2?

1923 is an expansion of Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe, with the spin-off show’s second installment now in full swing. The series follows the Dutton family’s efforts to protect their family land and received mostly positive reactions from critics and fans. As a result, it is setting up a promising conclusion to its second and final season.

However, according to one of the show’s stars, Sheridan distanced himself from the production of season 2. The prolific writer-producer wasn’t present on the sets during the filming of the second installment. As a result, Sheridan’s choice to remain on the sidelines could prove to be a costly mistake as the big-budget spectacle aims to stick the landing.

1923 star revealed why Taylor Sheridan never visited the sets of season 2

Created by Taylor Sheridan, 1923 quickly emerged as another hit in the writer-producer’s prolific filmography. The series is now in its second season, which received mostly positive reactions from critics and will conclude the story of this generation of the Dutton family.

Despite being a producer and head writer on the series, Sheridan reportedly did not visit its sets during the production of season 2. In an interview with Radio Times, actor Jerome Flynn who plays Banner Creighton, revealed the reason Sheridan distanced himself from the production.

Taylor’s so busy working on the plethora of other stuff that’s coming through him. No, we never saw him on set.

The former Game of Thrones star made the above statement, explaining that Sheridan’s other commitments kept him away from the sets.

Furthermore, Flynn added that Sheridan had complete faith in Ben Richardson who served as the primary director for the series. Richardson previously directed episodes of the prequel 1883 and first season of 1923. As a result, Sheridan likely entrusted Richardson with steering the ship home in season 2.

Taylor Sheridan staying away from 1923 season 2 could doom the series

Sheridan’s decision to not be involved with the actual production of 1923 season 2 could ring alarm bells for some fans, especially as the big-budget series heads for a conclusion. Although Richardson’s ability as a director isn’t in question, Sheridan’s presence is important to the success of most of his shows.

For instance, Sheridan directed some episodes of the shows he created, including Lioness and Landman. While Sheridan retained writing duties for the rest of the episode, he typically directed the initial episodes before handing over the responsibility to other directors.

However, 1923 is different since it is a tentpole project for Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe, which already concluded its flagship series late last year. The series is led by stars such as Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren and is arguably one of the more expensive shows in Sheridan’s catalog. As a result, Sheridan might have made a mistake by distancing himself from the production.

Furthermore, Sheridan’s choice to work on his other projects, especially as a writer could also hint at the writer-producer being stretched too thin with his abilities. Despite positive reviews, season 2 was off to a slow start, which adds pressure for it to deliver a satisfying conclusion. Hence, Sheridan directing an episode or two could’ve really helped the series stick the landing and it remains to be seen whether it proves to be a costly mistake.
