Rand Water, one of the region’s major bulk water suppliers, began its scheduled maintenance work last week. The extensive operations span multiple municipalities and are expected to continue through July. Water Tankers Respond to Urgent Needs in Affected Communities
The deployment of water tankers has become essential as many areas are now facing low water pressure or, in some cases, completely dry taps. Communities supplied by the Zuikerbosch and Zwartkopjes pump stations in Ekurhuleni are reportedly the most affected, with some residents bracing for water outages lasting over 48 hours.
Rand Water confirmed that the maintenance work is impacting supply throughout the province, with operations being conducted in phases to minimise overall disruption. However, due to the complexity of the upgrades, not all areas can be spared from temporary water cuts.

According to Rand Water spokesperson Makenosi Maroo, the infrastructure maintenance is progressing on schedule, and some areas can expect a staggered return of water supply over the coming days.
“During the maintenance period, Rand Water will issue regular updates through its official communication channels and social media platforms to keep customers and residents thoroughly informed of the progress,” Maroo stated.
The utility is also working closely with local municipalities to ensure that the water tankers are dispatched strategically, prioritising areas where the need is most urgent. Residents are encouraged to follow updates and communicate with their local ward councillors for timely information regarding tanker delivery times and water collection points.
While the disruptions have been inconvenient for many, some residents have welcomed the transparency and responsiveness shown by both Rand Water and municipal authorities. The proactive use of water tankers has helped ease frustrations in neighbourhoods that would otherwise be without any water for extended periods.
However, not all communities have received sufficient tanker coverage, leading to calls for more efficient distribution and coordination. Local NGOs and community leaders have also stepped in to assist with organising collection points and ensuring that elderly and disabled residents receive water promptly.
In some areas, residents are being urged to limit their water usage and store water in advance whenever possible to reduce pressure on limited resources.
