UK weather: Temperatures plunge to -8C as Met Office warns of sharp frost before thermometer skyrockets to 20C tomorrow

TEMPERATURES have plunged to -8C in some parts of the UK but temperatures will soon skyrocket tomorrow, said the Met Office.

Brits across the country will be able to bask in the sun and enjoy balmy temperatures tomorrow, according to meteorologists.

Wednesday morning started off on a chilly note, with overnight lows of -8.3C at Braemar in Aberdeenshire, said the Met Office.

Shap in Cumbria also saw bone-chilling temperatures overnight with temperatures as low as -6.8C record by meteorologists.

But even in Braemar, temperatures quickly rose with the strong, spring sunshine and a change in wind direction bringing warmer air from the south.

Parts of South West Wales and England could see isolated light spots of rain as today goes on due to cloud cover.

But Met Office forecaster Luke Miall said that the rest of Wednesday would be “fine and sunny across the board”.

The meteorologist added: “For many of us over the next few days the temperatures will be on the rise.”

The mercury has already begun creeping up on Wednesday with predicted highs of 17C in some areas.

And Thursday’s conditions look even better, with the first day of spring potentially the hottest of the year so far, according to the Met Office.

Dry and sunny weather is also expected to accompany the warmer temperatures for most of the UK.

The mercury could even get up to 20C in parts of the South East and London.

The warm southerly breeze comes after easterly winds brought chilly weather to the UK.

On Thursday, a low pressure system off Iberia will push heat up the Bay of Biscay towards the UK, creating warmer days here than in Spain and Portugal.

On Friday, the Portuguese capital Lisbon will be no better than 15C with showers through most of the day.

Similarly, Madrid in Spain will be a chilly 11C under a succession of showers.

The UK’s highest temperature of the year so far is 19.7C – recorded at Crosby in Merseyside on 9 March.

This means there is a decent chance Thursday’s high will exceed this.

However, the hottest-ever March temperature of 25.6C was recorded at Mepal, Cambridgeshire, in 1968 and will take some beating.

Marco Petagna, a meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “Temperatures already just started to pick up in places, but the trend to warmer temperatures is going to continue for the next few days now.

“So Wednesday, lots of sunshine around parts of southern England and Wales.

“We’ll see some clouds developing, particularly towards the south-west of England, but for most places, you have plenty of sunshine, and we’re drawing up warmer air now from the South and South East.”

The rest of the UK is more likely to see highs of 12°C to 15°C on Wednesday, Mr Petagna said.

Overnight temperatures will fall and a widespread frost is forecast to develop before it gets warmer again.
