The vehicle also collided with a local house causing some small damage.

The exact details of the collision are not yet known.

The driver of the car, a man aged in his late teens, was arrested at the scene and remains in Garda custody.

Gardai have sealed off the area as a forensics team are expected to arrive shortly.

A number of approach roads have also been sealed off.

Gardai have been contacted for an official comment on the incident.

The scene of the crash is on the route of today’s planned St Patrick’s Day parade in the town.
