Concert festivals should be fun, but what happened on the fifth of November 2021 was a disaster that many would never forget. Netflix’s new documentary, Trainwreck: The Astroworld Tragedy, dives deep into the events surrounding Travis Scott’s concert-turned-chaos.

The rapper founded the festival to honor his hometown’s vibrant hip-hop scene and culture. Fans from Houston and other parts of the country flock to witness Scott’s headline performance, only for it to end in a harrowing incident that resulted in multiple deaths.

The upcoming documentary is part of Netflix’s initiative to document the most disastrous events that shook the mainstream media. This includes festivals, political scandals, and media hoaxes compiled in an eight-part anthology.

The Astroworld Tragedy, directed by Yemi Bamiro and produced by Hannah Poulter, will premiere on June 10 and explore the disastrous music festival through interviews, footage from festivalgoers, and even 911 calls.

Trainwreck: The Astroworld Tragedy will feature interviews of people who attended the festival, the family members of those who died during the concert, officers from the Houston Police Department, Astroworld’s security personnel, and medical rescuers.

The documentary will also offer insights from experts on the responsibility of huge media enterprises like Live Nation and Travis Scott, which both organized the event.

Bamiro told Netflix that the desire to tell this haunting story stems from the need to discover the truth of what exactly happened at the third Astroworld festival and why it resulted in the deaths of ten people. “The objective for our film from the very start was to challenge all the misinformation that had become synonymous with Astroworld 2021,” he said.

Scott established Astroworld in 2018 in hopes of bringing people closer through music. The festival is known for its immersive culture, high-energy performances, stunning stage designs, and fun overall experience.

What everyone thought was the best night of their lives turned into a nightmare of horror. As Scott took the stage, the crowd became uncontrollable, causing a surge that physically injured hundreds of fans.

Many suffered from both minor and critical wounds, but ten people died due to compressive asphyxia, with ages ranging from 9 to 27. The tragedy caused an uproar from the public, demanding accountability from the organizers. In the official trailer released by Netflix, a fan was even seen begging the crew to stop the concert because they were unaware of what was happening.

The documentary is expected to show the aftermath of the tragedy, which involved lawsuits settled in court. The grand jury determined that what happened was a complete accident, and no person was criminally liable for the casualties.

Trainwreck: The Astroworld Tragedy will hit Netflix on June 10, 2025.
