Tragic GAA star, 25, remembered as ‘fearless competitor’ and ‘true Teemore man’ in heartbreaking tribute after sad death

STEPHEN McCARTHY was hailed as a “true Teemore man” by his hometown GAA club following his tragic death.

McCarthy passed away at the age of 25 passed away peacefully in the South West Acute Hospital, Enniskillen due to illness.

An electrician by trade, he was also a popular GAA player, having donned the colours of Teemore Shamrocks up until travelling to Australia in 2024.

In a heartbreaking tribute, the Fermanagh GAA club said it was “in shock” following his death.

It read: “Our club is in shock and mourning at the tragic passing of Stephen McCarthy, who proudly represented the club at both youth and adult levels.

“Stephen most recently played for the club in the 2023 season, lining out for the Shamrocks in the Reserve League and Championship.

“A fearless competitor—tough as nails and always willing to put his body on the line—Stephen was a true Teemore man who loved getting stuck in.

“He would have played in 2024 if not for travel commitments and often spoke of his plans to return in 2025.

“Our deepest condolences go out to Stephen’s family and friends.

“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis”

It prompted a deluge of tributes.

Aghadrumsee St Macartans said: “Aghadrumsee St Macartans GAC would like to offer our condolences to Teemore Shamrocks & the family of young Stephen McCarthy on his passing.

Derrygonnelly Harps posted: “The club would like to express its condolences to the extended McCarthy family and everyone associated with Teemore Shamrocks following the sad passing of Stephen.

St Patrick’s GAC said: “St Patrick’s GFC offer their deepest sympathies to Teemore Shamrocks, and to the family and friends of Stephen. Thinking of you all at this sad time.

Newtownbutler First Fermanaghs posted: “We would like to pass our sincerest sympathies to everyone at Teemore Shamrocks on the passing of their young Club Member Stephen McCarthy.

“Sincerest condolences to all his family, friends, & club mates during this difficult time.

McCarthy was laid to rest on Friday, with Teemore offering a follow-up tribute on social media.

It said: “Today we buried our beloved club member Stephen McCarthy.

“Players were reminiscing about great times had on the football field.

“A moment we remember is the minor win in June 2016. Stephen played as a back alongside his teammates.

“On days like this we remember the good times had as a team and the hardy footballer Stephen was.”
