Three ways to make the right claim for compensation if your train journey goes wrong

AS the Easter getaway draws near, make sure you don’t miss out if your train journey goes off the rails.

Remember, you can get compensation for cancelled or delayed journeys. Here’s how to make a claim . . .

We reveal how to make a claim for cancelled or delayed train journeys[/caption]

LATE ARRIVALS: Under the Delay Repay scheme, which most train companies are signed up to, what matters is the time you arrive at your destination, rather than how late your train leaves.

To check what time your train eventually rolled into the station, put the journey details into recenttraintimes.co.uk.

This applies to season tickets too.

You should get back a proportion of your overall pass cost for delays.

RIDE ON TIME: To claim, write down the date, time and length of the delay as well as any reason you were given at the time.

Do not throw away your tickets, as you will need to send a photo of them.

If they get swallowed at the barrier, tell the staff you need to keep the ticket to claim compensation.

Fill in the claim form on the train company website.

Make sure you apply for compensation for a delay within 28 days of your journey.

FARE’S FAIR: With the Delay Repay scheme, you are entitled to half your fare back (for the delayed leg of the journey) if your train arrives more than 30 minutes late.

You should get a full refund if it ran an hour or more over.

Many companies also offer a quarter of the fare for delays between 15 and 29 minutes.

If your train is delayed and you no longer want to travel as a result, you can ask for a refund of the whole fare.

But if the train company does not offer Delay Repay, you can still get compensation under National Rail Conditions of Carriage rules, but it will not be as much.
