“The weakest excuse for poor writing”: After Yellowstone, I’m Sure Taylor Sheridan’s ‘1923’ Season 2 Worst Scene Has No Reason to Exist

I’ve seen some weak excuses for bad writing, but folks, 1923 Season 2 might just take the cake. After Yellowstone, I expected Taylor Sheridan to deliver, but what did we get instead? A scene so unnecessary, so poorly written, it feels like it exists purely to waste screen time.

Look, I ain’t hating. I get that not every moment can be epic. But this is like scriptwriting on autopilot. And Sheridan can do better. Heck, he’s done better. So, why does this scene even exist?

Taylor Sheridan’s writing takes a nosedive in 1923 season 2 and this scene proves it

So I finally caught up with 1923 Season 2 and, woah – that scene with the hookers and the one girl trapped in the closet – I think, was absolutely unnecessary. I was appalled. Like, I get it, he’s a bad man. But did we really need that level of detail? Just showing her tied up would’ve been enough. Instead, it felt like Taylor Sheridan’s twisted fantasy playing out on screen.

Now, I understand 1923 is rated R. Violence, grit, all of that stuff. But there’s a difference between pushing boundaries and throwing in a scene that goes way too far just because you can. A Redditor wrote, “‘Maybe there is an actual plot involved!’ is the weakest excuse for poor writing I’ve ever seen.

And let’s talk about another misfire – Jack and Elizabeth Dutton. If we compare them to actual Dutton couples like Jacob and Cara or Spencer and Alex, they’re… well, bland. Jack keeps failing Elizabeth, and the girl’s been through a lot – isolation, hunger, wild animal attacks. And now she’s fed up.

Can’t blame her, though. Fans are wondering why Sheridan even tried to convince us these two were the future of the Dutton bloodline. Spencer and Alex seem far more likely.

Sheridan has proven he can deliver. But with 1923 Season 2, he’s making some crazy choices. And nah, not the good kind.

Fans call out Taylor Sheridan’s troubling pattern of violence and exploitation

Reddit is fired up over Sheridan’s fixation on violence against women. Some say his writing constantly demeans female characters, while others think the endless nudity feels exploitative — enough to make them quit watching.

Many are also pointing to his track record – Gemma in Sons of Anarchy, Beth in Yellowstone, Teonna in 1923, and others – arguing that this goes beyond storytelling and reflects a troubling pattern.

Sheridan’s work thrives on gritty realism, but again, there’s a fine line between raw storytelling and unnecessary shock value. Fans aren’t against showing hardships, but when it becomes a recurring, almost fetishized element, it’s a problem.

And 1923 just proved it; this wasn’t about the plot, it was about pushing the limits for no real reason.

Watch Yellowstone on Peacock and 1923 on Paramount Plus.
