Fans are aware Brendan Fraser came very close to playing Superman. According to many, his charming yet inherently kind demeanor would have been a perfect fit to portray Clark Kent on screen.

As such, losing the opportunity to witness him donning the red and blue suit has been a disappointment to the millions who appreciate him worldwide. What made matters worse was Fraser revealing the reason behind him losing Superman in an interview once.
However, nothing could have prepared the world for Sandra Oh being fan cast as Lois Lane opposite The Whale actor. If anything, this missed opportunity seems to be haunting fans even more.
Brendan Fraser was disappointed to lose the chance to play Superman
As stated above, Brendan Fraser almost being cast in Superman is a known fact among fans. Fraser revealed in an episode of The Howard Stern Show in 2023 that at the time, almost every who’s-who in the industry was reading for the role.

However, his casting was very close to coming to fruition. It failed to materialize, though, due to an unfortunate reason.
I felt disappointed that there was an amazing opportunity and it didn’t come to fruition. It had to do a lot with some shenanigans and studio politics.
He further noted that his screen test might have contributed to his rejection, too. According to him, it was evident that he was “only there like 98%,” and that did not help his case. Although it seemed to work out for the best for Brendan Fraser, even then he was worried about being type-casted.
There was a sort of Faustian bargain that went into it. I think inherently, I didn’t want to be known for only one thing because I prided myself on diversity my whole professional life and I’m not a one-trick pony.
Recently, though, with debates around a new Superman making his debut soon, this topic has been making the rounds again. While most fans obviously feel dejected about it, something else has sent them spiraling into outer space.
While on the topic of Brendan Fraser starring in Superman, someone fancast Killing Eve star Sandra Oh as his Lois Lane, and others definitely see the vision.
Fans mourn losing the opportunity to see Sandra Oh as Lois Lane opposite Brendan Fraser
Debates around which Superman is better is nothing new. Similarly, fans mourning some actor losing the chance to land the role has been an age-old tradition. As such, fans grieving about Brendan Fraser’s missed opportunity as he actively wanted the part is understandable.

However, Sandra Oh has never been associated with Lois Lane in her entire career. Even so, her being cast in the character by fans has caused a palpable sense of loss in the community because the vision is so clear.
While some claimed that this would have been “utterly perfect,” others stated that this was their new dream. Some also stated that they had always thought of Lois Lane as Asian in their head, and were glad to see others agreeing. One fan also exclaimed that they would have had insane chemistry if it had come true.

Both Brendan Fraser and Sandra Oh have established glorious careers for themselves. Interestingly, the actor was once also supposed to play a supervillain in a movie until it got shelved.
However, this fan-casting has sent pangs of heartbreak at the thought of what could have been. Although that ship sailed a long time ago, we can only hope they might get the chance to become Superman and Lois Lane in an alternate universe.
The new Superman makes his debut in theaters on July 11th, 2025.
