The Minecraft community had their doubts about how the movie would turn out, and the first trailer didn’t do much to ease those concerns. Starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, the trailer did spark up a wave of negative reactions online mainly because of its jarring visuals.
Now, projections suggest that the live-action adaptation of the hit video game is set to debut with around $58 million in North America. While that’s not a total disaster, what is more hurtful is the fact that it’s still trailing behind the MCU’s lowest-performing film, The Marvels!
A Minecraft Movie’s opening weekend projections are lower than The Marvels!
The Minecraft movie seems to be off to a rocky start, and that’s after a long and bumpy road to the big screen. Hollywood has been trying to craft a Minecraft film for years, given how the video game just engulfed the whole wide world just a few years back, but has consistently failed.
Even Jack Black’s version of the film faced its fair share of delays thanks to the pandemic and labor strikes. Now that it’s finally set to hit theaters, the early projections suggest it might struggle to stack up at the box office.
As per The Hollywood Reporter reports, Warner Bros. and Legendary poured a hefty $150 million, that too before marketing but projections are only hovering around $58 million for its opening weekend. With estimates ranging between $53 million and $63 million, the studio’s hoping a final marketing push can nudge it toward the higher end.
To put things into perspective, and show just how rough things are looking, The Marvels, the MCU’s lowest opener, was originally expected to make $60-$65 million but ended up limping to just $47 million. If Minecraft doesn’t manage to build some serious momentum, there is no telling that it could end up digging itself an even deeper hole than Marvel’s biggest blunder.
Why are fans already upset about A Minecraft Movie?
The Minecraft movie hasn’t even hit theaters yet, but that hasn’t stopped fans from piling on the criticism, and the official trailer is largely to blame.
For a game as beloved and iconic as Minecraft, expectations were high. Yet the trailer’s awkward mix of live-action and CGI left many scratching their heads.
And truth be told, the backlash is understandable when you consider what Minecraft represents. The game, which is now over 13 years old, is more than just a hit to the people who play it. With over 300 million copies sold, Minecraft is practically ingrained in the minds of an entire generation.
On YouTube alone, Minecraft content has surpassed one trillion views, making it a genre of its own. With such a rich world to draw from, fans expected the official movie to deliver something visually and emotionally engaging. Instead, the trailer’s dull visuals and awkward green screen effects felt uninspired. Some viewers even compared Jack Black’s casting as Steve to the infamous “ugly Sonic” fiasco!
Many fans also noted that there’s no shortage of impressive Minecraft-inspired content online, much of it created by dedicated fans who’ve captured the game’s unique charm better than the official trailer seems to have done.
That said, given the legions of young fans are still interested to check the film out and drag their parents to the theater, no amount of bad reviews or memes can stop A Minecraft Movie from making big bucks!
