The second season of Natsu Hyuga’s The Apothecary Diaries has received a great reception from friends, and with just ten episodes under its belt, the season is already gaining more popularity than the first season. However, the most anticipated episode of the series is yet to come, which features the widely popular frog scene.

While anime fans won’t know this, manga and light novel fans understand the significance of the scene and how it changes Maomao and Jinshi’s relationship in The Apothecary Diaries. Thus, it is justified that TOHO goes above and beyond in adapting the popular frog scene and making it the highlight of the second season of the series.
But what fans don’t realize is that TOHO has a separate reason for going overboard with the upcoming episode. The scene features their favorite character from The Apothecary Diaries, Jinshi, and it has been noticed multiple times that whenever Jinshi is featured in an episode, TOHO animation makes it a special one for the fans of the series.
The famous frog scene in The Apothecary Diaries
The Apothecary Diaries has a lot of prominent moments between Maomao and Jinshi, but nothing compares to the infamous frog scene, which changes the entire dynamic of their relationship in some ways. The scene takes place in Chapter 63 of The Apothecary Diaries manga, and is also hinted in the opening theme of the second season. It will be portrayed in the upcoming episode 11 of the series.
Maomao joins a hunting trip with Jinshi, Gaoshun, and Basun, where Jinshi and Maomao are attacked and forced to jump into a waterfall. After escaping the attack, the two enter a cavern and try to escape with Maomao climbing on Jinshi’s shoulders and reaching the exit. However, as she tries to do so, a frog jumps over Maomao’s head and startles her.

Maomao being startled leads to the two falling on the ground with Maomao being on top of Jinshi. But the situation really turns awkward when Maomao “feels something” between Jinshi’s legs and realizes he is not actually a eunuch. This complicates the situation even more, but Maomao refuses to accept the fact and points out that she only felt a frog.
TOHO’s reason for going over the top with the frog scene
Considering the fact that the frog scene is quite important for the overall storyline of The Apothecary Diaries, it is safe to assume that TOHO would put even more effort into adapting it in episode 11. However, the real reason why the production studio will go above and beyond for this scene is the appearance of Jinshi in the episode, which is a big deal for the studio.

There have been many instances where Jinshi’s appearance has changed the entire vibe of the episode. The story automatically becomes smoother, and the animation also feels a little more refined. This proves that just like every other studio, TOHO also has a favorite character, and it is none other than Jinshi, the most important character after Maomao.
It is understandable for a studio to have a favorite character, especially someone like Jinshi, as they put more focus into the character and make it better for the series. But it doesn’t change the fact that the frog scene is significant for both Maomao and Jinshi in The Apothecary Diaries.
