There’s no hiding that the Marvel Cinematic Universe struggled to keep its momentum after the success of Avengers: Endgame. This brings us to the superhero fatigue that plagued many viewers—it did not help that the onslaught of content was prioritized more than the quality. This trend changes now, especially with Anthony and Joe Russo returning to helm Avengers: Doomsday.

It’s been a long time since we’ve witnessed the global phenomenon of Avengers: Endgame so there is so much expectation that Avengers: Doomsday will live up to the hype. The problem is that the MCU has been dealing with storytelling problems for quite some time. Anthony Russo and Joe Russo are very much aware of this.
During their interview with The Sunday Times, they shared their plans on what they would do to bring back the old game of Marvel. Having faced the same challenges in the past—with Endgame assembling so many heroes and villains—they now know better how to address the issues.
Part of the reason Joe and I decided to go back is exactly what you’re talking about. There needs to be more of a central narrative. That was something we were very specific about when we worked with Marvel [before]. We would like to bring the focused narrative back.
This is exactly what doomed a lot of Marvel films and shows over the past few years. The lack of a cohesive narrative that interweaves one franchise with another was obviously the main culprit. It was so much easier to trace the story back then, but with the introduction of the multiverse, it gets confusing for both old and new fans.
With the Russo brothers’ promise to streamline the plot, we can expect that they will be the heroes who will save Marvel from its own doom. As to how they will incorporate Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom after he died as Iron Man—they refused to tell.
Why did the Russo brothers return to the MCU?
The Russo brothers’ return to the MCU is more than just their love and passion for the genre. While they are aware of some people bashing it as a less comprehensive form of storytelling, Anthony and Joe think superhero movies are relevant for adults if they watch them with an open and mature mind.
Now, fans will be expecting a lot from the upcoming Avengers film and how they will introduce Doctor Doom. We remember that the MCU moved away from the Kang storyline after Jonathan Majors’ issue so this will be a new chapter for all of us to witness.
