Star Wars Won’t Survive Without Tony Gilroy and His Plan for Mon Mothma in ‘Andor’ S2 Cements That: “I don’t think anybody has a harder road than she does”

The second season of Andor is right around the corner with the titular Rebel spy’s story set for an epic conclusion this year. Created by Tony Gilroy, the series has emerged as one of the best Star Wars media of recent times, with fans eagerly anticipating the second installment, which will also feature characters like Mon Mothma and Luthen Rael.

During a recent interview, Gilroy opened up about concluding the titular character’s story. At the same time, Gilroy also teased what fans can expect from some of the supporting characters such as Mon Mothma in the upcoming second installment. Gilroy’s comments prove how integral the showrunner is to the franchise and here is what he had to say.

Tony Gilroy served as the creator and showrunner for Andor, which is set to return with its final installment next month. Ahead of the show’s second season premiere, Gilroy sat down for a conversation with Entertainment Weekly.

During the interview, Gilroy discussed continuing the storyline of the titular character while also furthering the arcs of supporting characters such as Mon Mothma. The showrunner explained how the latter was integral to the overall story in season 2.

I would say, of all the characters in the show, of all the hellacious things that people go through, and all of the difficulties and hardships, I don’t think anybody has a harder road than she does.

Gilroy made the above statement, teasing that the second season will explore Genevieve O’Reilly’s character leaving the Senate, which was been hinted at in previous Star Wars media.

Furthermore, Gilroy added that Mothma has do deal with tension, fear, and anxiety more than any other character on the show, which makes her extremely integral. As a result, Gilroy’s comments prove all the characters in the series are handled with the same care and attention.

During the same interview, Gilroy revealed that he would’ve loved to complete the five-season plan he originally had for the series provided he had unlimited time and budget. However, Gilroy felt that the twelve-episode second season was more beneficial to showcase Andor’s transformation.

In a separate interview with Collider, Gilroy also confirmed that he would be stepping away from the galaxy far, far away after Andor season 2. As a result, the franchise would be worse off without the showrunner’s involvement, especially as Lucasfilm is already rumored for a major shift in leadership in the future.

Gilroy’s comments about Mon Mothma’s story in season 2 prove that he cares about all the characters and values giving weightage to their individual arcs. As a result, Gilroy had treated the Star Wars landscape as a tapestry, which has made Andor so compelling to watch. This sort of approach seems lacking in some of the other recent Star Wars projects, proving that Gilroy’s departure will greatly affect the franchise moving forward.

Andor is streaming on Disney+ with season 2 slated to premiere on April 22, 2025.
