Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Can Do What ‘Voyager’ Couldn’t

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 is all set to premiere on Paramount+ this July, two whole years after its sophomore season. The prequel to the original series has been one of the franchise’s highest-rated shows, and many have compared it to the good old episodic days of early Star Trek TV.

While shows like TNG and Voyager have surpassed newer shows like Picard and Discovery by miles, Strange New Worlds season 3 can beat those shows in quality and stand on its own. It can especially beat Voyager if the third season gives interesting and morally grey villains, unlike the Kate Mulgrew-led series.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is currently the only live-action show that is airing (though Starfleet Academy is on the horizon). After two incredible seasons, season 3 will begin to air next month in July, and fans have been waiting for a conclusion to the Gorns’ takeover of the ship, which is set to continue in the season 3 premiere.

The Gorns have been incredible villains for Strange New Worlds’ bridge crew and are extremely menacing. They are rarely seen, but their presence is always felt. The Gorn will make another appearance in the season 3 premiere and will possibly continue to be a threat. However, the show’s synopsis promises that a threat is looming.

The Star Trek franchise has only had a few batches of antagonists that are truly threatening to the bridge crew in more ways than one. A good villain is morally ambiguous, with their actions at the end defining their position on the spectrum. Shows like Voyager had hardcore villains like the Borg, who were great, but did not provide profound commentary.

In a series that is built on anthropological differences between species, moral ambiguity is something that can be explored quite well, and has been in some ways in the franchise. Strange New Worlds season 3 has the potential to introduce some villains during the Enterprise’s adventures that can cause a lot of cultural friction between them.

For months, fans of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds were kept in the dark as there was no news as to when season 3 would be released. The show has been one of the best things to come out of the franchise since its glory days with Voyager and TNG, and the third season has been long-awaited by fans.

Last week, the makers released season 3’s first official trailer, which promises plenty of new adventures and new species to encounter. Captain Pike and the Enterprise are all set to go to new worlds and tackle fresh enemies and cultures, which may challenge the ideologies of the Federation in new and interesting ways.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been one of the most beloved shows in the franchise and is, as of now, the only live-action show running. The trailer also gives a hint at Paul Wesley’s Captain Kirk taking over the ship for a brief period, although it might not be in the way fans have seen in TOS.

Season 4 has been in production since March and will possibly be released in the coming year (via Variety). Much like previous seasons, season 3 will also reportedly explore multiple genres within the setting of the Star Trek universe, including a murder mystery that is set to be directed by Jonathan Frakes.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 will premiere on Paramount+ on July 17, 2025.
