Squid Game Season 3: I Will Be a Wreck If Kang Ae-Shim’s Geum-ja Doesn’t Get Out Alive

Squid Game season 3 is right around the corner, with the globally popular phenomenon set to conclude with its final installment releasing later this month. Ahead of its premiere, the third season dropped a final trailer online, which shines the spotlight on Kang Ae-Shim’s Geum-ja.

Following the trailer’s choice of using Geum-ja in a specific style, I am now worried that the promotional material might be hinting at a grim fate for the fan-favorite character. However, Geum-ja deserves to make it out of the games alive, and fans like me will be wrecked if she does not. Here is everything you need to know about Geum-ja’s potential fate in Squid Game season 3.

Squid Game season 3 trailer shines the spotlight on Kang Ae-Shim’s Geum-ja

Squid Game premiered in 2021 and became a global phenomenon, with the Korean series gaining immense popularity for its themes and characters. The second season debuted last year and introduced Kang Ae-shim as Jang Geum-ja, also known as Player 149.

In season 2, Geum-ja is revealed as the mother of gambler Park Yong-sik, and the duo fight for survival alongside Lee Jung-jae as Seong Gi-hun. The latest trailer for the third season opens with and features a speech from Geum-ja, which serves as a source of encouragement for Gi-hun.

However, the additional spotlight given to Geum-ja in the trailer, along with the theme of survival associated with her speech, suggests that the fan-favorite character is being set up for a tragic fate in the third and final season.

Geum-ja’s character arc revolves around her love for her son and her sacrificial nature as a mother, which is contrasted with the game’s complex and exploitative nature. Since only one player survives the game, Geum-ja and her son working together was always a doomed proposition.

The sixth episode of season 2 explored the rift between Geum-ja and her son, setting up even more devastating consequences for the character in season 3. During an interview with GogglerMY, Kang Ae-Shim accidentally suggested that her character might die in the final installment.

The final trailer for season 3 also sees Geum-ja encouraging Gi-hun during a bleak moment, describing him as the savior meant to save all the other players from a dark fate. However, the dialogue could be foreshadowing a grim fate for most other players, including Geum-ja.

Ultimately, all signs point to Geum-ja falling prey to the game’s oppressive system in the third season. However, her death will be extremely tragic for fans like me, who have grown attached to the character. As a result, I am sure no one wants Geum-ja to die in the final season.

Given that Geum-ja’s arc revolves around her love for her son, she seems poised to make the sacrificial play. She could give up her life to ensure someone like Gi-hun, whom she has the utmost faith in, survives. A sacrificial death seems like a plausible ending for the character, and I will be a wreck if Gi-hun does not make it out alive.

Squid Game season 3 releases on June 27, 2025, and you can catch up on the previous episodes on Netflix.
