‘Something we never want to see’ – Missile thrown onto pitch towards Fenerbahce goalkeeper during Rangers clash

FENERBAHCE goalkeeper İrfan Can Eğribayat was targeted by a missile thrown from the crowd at Ibrox during his team’s match against Rangers.

The two teams played out a tense thriller in Glasgow in the second leg of their last-16 tie in the Europa League.

Gers came into the game with a 3-1 lead from the first leg in Istanbul but the Turkish giants fought back to win 2-0 on the night, forcing extra-time and penalties.

The shootout itself offered even more drama, with Jack Butland saving TWO of the spot kicks before Mert Hakan Yandaş blazed the decisive penalty over the bar.

It means Rangers march on into the quarter-finals of the competition, where they will play Atheltic Bilbao (whose stadium will host the final) after tonight’s heroics.

However in the second half of extra-time at Ibrox there were some unsavoury scenes as what appeared to be a vape was thrown onto the pitch in the direction of Eğribayat.

In the immediate aftermath he gestured to the referee and handed him the object.

It’s not clear if the vape actually hit Eğribayat or not.

Speaking on commentary for TNT Sports, lead commentator Roy Hamilton described the incident as “something we never want to see.”

Eğribayat would go on to save a penalty in the shootout, from Ianis Hagi, but it would be in vein.

Gers boss Barry Ferguson will be without two key players for the next round however.

John Souttar and Mohamed Diomande were booked on the night and they will be suspended for the quarters.
