Directed by Marc Webb, Disney’s musical fantasy Snow White starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot is set to premiere on March 21, 2025. The live-action reimagining1937’s animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is one of the highly awaited movies of 2025, despite the movie facing a fair share of backlash.

Ahead of the release, the film became the target for the story changing from the source material to probably a ‘woke’ one. The casting for the film wasn’t appreciated at the time of announcement either. But now Snow White is just a few days away from its release, and early reviewers have a different opinion than what was predicted.
Rachel Zegler states Disney’s Snow White to remind young people how strong they are
The highly awaited Disney’s Snow White starring Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen is set to release in theaters on March 21, 2025. It features original songs from composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Following the announcement of the movie’s cast, Rachel Zegler faced backlash over playing a Disney princess with a Latinx background.

The actress’ statements further stirred up controversy when she noted in an interview with Extra that the upcoming movie would modernize Snow White and the original movie was dated. It should be known that firstly, fans do not appreciate the remakes of the classic movies, but if they get on board with the idea of it, they prefer the story to be the same. Zegler’s comments were bound to make the fans unhappy; thus, she received backlash for the same. She said
There’s a big focus on her love story with a guy who stalks her. Weird. So we didn’t do that this time. I was scared of the original version. I think I watched it once and never picked it up again. We have a different approach to what I’m sure a lot of people will assume is a love story because, like, we cast a guy in the movie.
Zegler continued that it’s about whether or not she finds love along the way. She added that it’s an inner journey she goes on to find her true self and meets a lot of people along the way that makes her journey incredible.
One of the controversial opinions that came out at the time was the ‘skin as white as snow.’ Talking about it, she shared with Variety,
It fell back to another version of Snow White that was told in history, where she survived a snowstorm that occurred when she was a baby. And so the King and the Queen decided to name her Snow White to remind her of her resilience.
The actress shared that one of the core points in the live-action adaptation is for every young woman or young person to remember how strong they are.
Early reviewers for Snow White reveal it’s different from what was expected
Ahead of the release of the movie, Disney has opted for a low-key premiere of the movie compared to the usual media-packed red carpet to avoid any questions related to the controversies. However, some critics were able to make it to the first screening of the movie and have positive reviews to share.

According to @MyTimeToShineH,
I talked to a few people who have seen Snow White, and they all liked it! They said it’s one of the better Disney live-action remakes.
Another user noted that the new songs in the live-action adaptation are actually good. A third user mentioned that they are excited to watch the movie, whereas another user pointed out that they’ll simply watch it because they are curious about it.
However, users also pointed out that it’s pretty evident that the two leading actresses do not get along well. People reported that the two of them have nothing in common, and on top of that, their political views differ.
Gadot, who is Israeli-born and served in the Israel Defense Forces, has advocated for the release of Israeli hostages, whereas Zegler voiced her support for Palestine amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The publication noted,
Gal is annoyed by the movie drama. She enjoyed filming. She was fine with Rachel, but they are not friends. They have nothing in common. They did a job together, and that’s it.
It was also shared that Gadot also did not appreciate Rachel Zegler’s comments about the original movie. She believes that one shouldn’t criticize and cause drama for a project they’ve signed on to.
Snow White premieres on March 21.
