Severance is very quickly becoming one of the most talked-about television shows in recent months. Its compelling premise and the second season’s hype have caused it to gain even more notoriety than before, taking the internet by storm and getting quite a lot of new watchers.
Amid this, it is not surprising that its cast is getting more and more attention for their excellent performances in the project. Most recently, a fan-favorite actor finally got the attention and respect he deserves from a very surprising source.
Simu Liu was unknowingly in the presence of a legend
Zach Cherry’s performance as Dylan in Severance has specifically been praised. Going from a surface-level comic-relief character to becoming one of the most complex and interesting ones in the series, his progression has made him beloved among viewers.
However, Cherry has played many other characters that are not granted the same amount of depth. Most famously, he played the role of Klev in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While he had a small appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming, asking Peter Parker to “do a flip,” his role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was a lot greater, vlogging the iconic bus scene.
Now that the actor is finally getting the recognition he deserves through the Apple TV series, even his past co-stars are taking note. Simu Liu, who played the role of Shang-Chi, seems to be binge-watching the beloved series and has realized that he unknowingly ended up acting with an absolute unit.
Liu ended up tweeting about the same, apologizing to Cherry for not knowing exactly who he was working with.
Zach Cherry was a lot more interesting in Severance
Zach Cherry’s characters in the MCU weren’t given much depth. This isn’t surprising considering his roles were cameos and were put in with the intention of comedy. However, it did make it difficult for audiences to understand the true level of mastery the actor is capable of.
While he has starred in several other projects that prove his talent, one cannot help but look at Severance when discussing the level of depth he can provide to a character. When the series starts, Dylan is yet another funny guy in an office setting. He jokes around and brings light to a dark series, not given a bigger purpose than that.
However, as the story progresses, he turns from comic relief to a revolutionary, acting as a catalyst for Lumon’s system and turning the series on its head. A simple memory of his son takes the jokes out of his day and turns him into a ticking time bomb.
One can imagine that it is very difficult to balance these two themes. At the same time, Cherry ended up doing it effortlessly, switching between comedic themes and raw emotion effortlessly. The presence that he brought to the series is perhaps why Simu Liu was forced to put respect on his name.
