‘Sakamoto Days’ Is Already in Dire Need of a Remake and the First Season Isn’t Even Over

Sakamoto Days was destined for greatness with its very engaging manga and interesting premise. Fans also knew that an anime adaptation of this manga could become an instant hit, reshaping the Shonen anime scene.

However, almost all the anticipations and expectations that fans had for this franchise fell face first the moment its first episode dropped. Things were not how everyone expected them to be, and all wondered whether it would get better.

But, now that Sakamoto Days season 1 ends within a month, even that hope is lost. Perhaps what we need now is not a season 2 but a remake that can do justice to the source material.

A rough start that shocked fans

From the very first episode, fans knew that this adaptation was going to make creative decisions that they would not appreciate. First of all, many of the scenes were cut from the manga, like the very important bus hijacking part. This segment was important to establish the mutual understanding Sakamoto has with his wife.

After that, we also see a glaring lack of nicely choreographed fight sequences which were the prime selling point of the manga. Here, the very detailed fights get done in a single frame without much motion whatsoever. The part where Osaragi cuts down 2 subordinates of Kashima should have been depicted more fluidly, but again what we get are still frames.

However, the most disappointing aspect of Sakamoto Days is, hands down, its lackluster animation. The color palette that they are using looks outdated and faded, robbing Sakamoto Days of its appeal. The manga has really good art, and it clearly does not deserve this kind of treatment in the animation department.

Though yes, not everything is bad, as the anime has its decent moments, and we do appreciate that. The recent fight between Sakamoto and Kashima was well-received and it also got praise. However, is that enough?

Where is the big moment in season one of Sakamoto Days?

To generate hype amongst fans, almost all anime present a big viral segment that can make them look forward to the next season. But even though we are nearing the season finale of Sakamoto Days, it has not delivered any viral-worthy moments yet.

There were many chances where it could have stepped up its game and become more than a washed-out version of Spy x Family, but it did not. The manga has some of the finest and incredibly well-thought-out action scenes like Sakamoto repelling bullets with nothing but a ball. But none of them are utilized properly in anime.

If the animation was truly spectacular, it would have garnered way more fans. However, every week, it is just receiving criticisms and backlashes.

Now that season 2 of Sakamoto Days is set to release in July 2025, the big question of whether watching it will be worth it or not remains. If they cannot provide a remake of the first season, the most the makers can do is give us an immensely better second season.

Watch Sakamoto Days on Netflix.
