Reese Witherspoon: “I was very invested in” One Case I Was Made Foreman of During Jury Duty After Legally Blonde Success

Reese Witherspoon’s Legally Blonde experience has apparently helped her beyond establishing her as a pop-culture icon. The Big Little Lies actress recently claimed in an interview that the movie helped her power through a long trial when she was called on jury duty.

While she initially did not want to be a part of that, by the time the trial was in full flow, she became completely invested in it. The hilarious part, however, was that she was appointed as foreman during the trial, as the others believed she truly went to a law school. Although that only increased her worries, in true Elle Woods fashion, she slayed it.

Reese Witherspoon claimed Legally Blonde helped her during her jury duty

Reese Witherspoon recently appeared in an episode of The Graham Norton Show with Will Ferrell for their upcoming movie, You’re Cordially Invited. During the interview, Witherspoon recounted how Legally Blonde helped her during her jury duty.

As fans are aware, qualified citizens are required to serve their term for jury duty in the States. Reese Witherspoon, too, randomly got selected to serve her term a few years after the release of the iconic movie.

I remember it was after Legally Blonde. It was probably like seven years after Legally Blonde, I got called for jury duty and it was in Beverly Hills.

Her hopes of getting out of it were dashed, however, as they ended up picking her any way. She further noted that although the trial spanned about two weeks, it felt like an eternity to her.

No listen, it was two solid weeks every day going in. And I was watching it and it was a dog bite case but it was very clear, I was very invested in this case.

The most fascinating part in this, though, was that when the time came for a foreman to be appointed, everybody unanimously picked her.

It not only hiked up her worries, but the surrealness of the situation stunned her. Especially as everybody truly thought that she “went to law school”

I was like, ‘Y’all this is really upsetting. I definitely did not go to law school, I didn’t finish college.

She continued that the only qualification she had was that she played “a lawyer in a movie once”. Nevertheless, her experience during jury duty taught her some hard lessons.

Reese Witherspoon claimed that people should take a chance to serve their jury duty

While Reese Witherspoon initially had qualms about her time as part of the jury, it ended up teaching her some hard life lessons. She noted during the interview that one of the most shocking things she learned at the time was just how little knowledge people had about the legal system.

As such, she believes that anybody who gets picked for the role should do their part to make sure a fair trial takes place.

If you get picked for jury duty, please do it. Some bad stuff goes down there.

What added to her conviction was understanding how biased a trial can get if there is no one to temper opinions. She recalled that at the time, some jury members were convinced that the defendant was in the wrong just because of “the way she looked”

As People reported, the case involved the plaintiff suing a dog-owning neighbor after she suffered a dog bite on her hand. While on the surface it looks like a simple case of a negligent owner, the truth was something else.

This other lady put her hand in a dog fight. What did your mother always tell you, don’t put your hand in a dog fight.

Reese Witherspoon believes that in similar cases, a biased jury might end up wrongly convicting people. As such, she insisted that people should serve their jury duty to prevent such things from happening.

You’re Cordially Invited will be available on 30th January 2025 on Prime Video. Legally Blonde, too, is available on Prime Video.
