Real Reason Malcolm in the Middle Nearly Gender-Swapped Jamie

Malcolm in the Middle was an iconic sitcom that premiered in 2000, and millions of people became its fans. Surrounding the character of Frankie Muniz’s Malcolm, a bright and intelligent boy, the show revolved around his dysfunctional family and the shenanigans that they got up to.

However, it wasn’t your ordinary sitcom where the situations would create moments of absolute hilarity, it was a sitcom where characters had emotions and wholesome moments and showed each other the importance of a family, countless times.

Malcolm in the Middle was more than a sitcom

Let’s not forget, the show gave Bryan Cranston a chance, which made him famous and worthy enough to take on the role of Walter White in AMC’s Breaking Bad in the future. But more than that, Malcolm in the Middle had a lot of love to share with the world.

It wasn’t the fact that Bryan Cranston was covered in 60,000 bees or that Malcolm in the Middle was shot like a single-camera format that made the show special.

The dysfunctional family of Malcolm (who had a high IQ of 165) would often fight, squabble, create problems, have some slapstick comedy, and might even confront difficult situations, however, they always faced it together.

The show had plenty of wholesome moments and important events that made the audience feel like a part of this crazy, chaotic family. The single-shot camera format also helped since Frankie Muniz’s Malcolm would often talk into the camera (breaking the 4th wall) and invite us to be a part of his little world.

Throughout it all, the show found humor in the constant chaos and the relatable things that almost every family goes through in their lifetime, which made Malcolm in the Middle special. Speaking of humor, did you know that the creators hadn’t decided the gender of Jamie until after the fourth season ended?

The creators hadn’t decided on the gender of Jamie!

It was at the end of the 4th season that Lois gave birth to their 4th child and gave him the name Jamie. Except, it wasn’t actually decided whether Jamie would be a boy or a girl.

According to Mental Floss, the creators of the show were in a dilemma, and although Lois had her baby, they were confused whether it would be a boy or a girl.

The show ended on a cliffhanger where they name the baby “Jamie,” but it isn’t revealed whether Jamie is a boy or a girl. That part came in the fifth season as Jamie was introduced as the fifth child of Malcolm in Malcolm in the Middle.

It is fun to know that the creators were equally clueless about the storyline, and some decisions were taken impromptu without thinking too much about the future. This brought out a more human side of the show, making the series more human at heart.

Malcolm in the Middle, which was released in the year 2000 and ran for 7 seasons, currently stands at an iconic rating of 8.2/10 on IMDb and a whopping 91% (audience score) on Rotten Tomatoes.

Malcolm in the Middle is currently available to stream on Disney+ (USA).
