Police have arrested a 35-year-old man in connection with the mass shooting that claimed the lives of seven men in Gugulethu on Saturday, 28 June 2025.
Detectives from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit apprehended the suspect in Cape Town City Centre on Monday evening, following a fast-moving investigation.
Officials are currently processing the suspect, who will appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court once authorities lay formal charges.
Deadly Attack in Kanana Informal Settlement
Police responded to a call in the early hours of Saturday and discovered the bodies of seven men with gunshot wounds inside a house in the Kanana informal settlement.
Witnesses reported that the victims were socialising in a kitchen when gunmen opened fire.
Three other men present at the scene managed to escape unharmed.
Just days later, police found three more bodies at different locations in nearby Samora Machel.
Earlier that same week, three suspected hijackers were killed in a shootout during a foiled hijacking attempt in Nyanga.
Mchunu described the situation in the Cape Flats as dire, warning, “It is as if we have to choose between protecting the people and dealing with the murderers; but in reality, we have no choice.”
Second Suspect on the Run
Police are still hunting Loyiso Matinisi, who they want in connection with the killings.
Police are urging anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact Sergeant Sithembele Sambunjelwa on 073 416 5224.
Authorities will handle all details confidentially.
Police have warned that those who commit violent crimes will face the full force of the law.
