One Piece: Roger’s Sickness Could Make Chopper as More Than a Gag Character

Tony Tony Chopper, the doctor of the Straw Hat Pirates in One Piece, has been one of the most loved characters within the series. However, despite his fame and popularity, there are certain aspects of his character that feel unjustified within the storyline. The most important one among them is his insignificance to the ongoing plot.

While Chopper is an important character in One Piece, he has not been able to contribute much to the central storyline. He has not seen any kind of power-up or any major character development that would make him feel like an interesting character. In fact, the only thing he is mainly known for is the gags and comedic moments within the story.

There is a possibility that Eiichiro Oda is saving Chopper’s development or upgrade for a crucial moment within the One Piece storyline. This crucial moment is most likely connected to the sickness that Gol D. Roger, the former Pirate King, had.

The incurable disease that led to Gol D. Roger’s execution

Every One Piece fan knows that Gol D. Roger is one of the most important characters within the story. He was the only pirate besides Joy Boy who actually managed to navigate through the entire Grand Line and find the last island called Laugh Tale. This led to him being declared the King of the Pirates, the most significant title of One Piece.

However, Roger’s journey was marked by a hindrance in the form of an incurable disease, which he was diagnosed with. This disease was supposed to kill him way earlier, but Crocus, the doctor of the Roger Pirates, managed to slow the effects down, which gave Roger the time he needed to complete his journey in One Piece and find the treasure.

When he achieved his goal, he knew that his illness would cause a problem for his crew, and thus he decided to disband them. Ultimately, he was captured by the Marines, who then publicly executed him and gave more fuel to his announcement of finding the One Piece treasure and taking away the title of the Pirate King from him.

Chopper might come in clutch with Roger’s sickness

There is no doubt that Roger’s sickness was one of the biggest twists in his journey, but it is never discussed within the story, unlike the other diseases. Thus, it is safe to assume that Eiichiro Oda is most likely planning something with it and will use it as a plot device in the future One Piece narrative. The most significant use of it would be to give the same sickness to Luffy, considering the parallels between the two One Piece characters.

If Luffy gets this sickness, it will pose a big challenge for Chopper, whose goal in One Piece is to find a cure for every disease in the world.

If he manages to cure the incurable sickness, the whole perspective towards his character will change, and he will gain the respect he deserves as one of the most significant members of the Straw Hat Pirates.

Chopper has always been portrayed as a gag character, but curing the sickness that resulted in the death of the former Pirate King and almost killed the upcoming Pirate King would bring his shining moment in the series. In the end, it all depends on Oda and how he plays it all out in One Piece.

One Piece is currently available to watch on Crunchyroll.
