Neil Lennon back in Scottish football for first time in FOUR YEARS as Celtic hero lands challenging new job

NEIL LENNON has returned to Scottish football management for the first time in four years, after he was named the new boss of Dunfermline Athletic.

The Pars are currently struggling in the Championship as they sit second bottom of the table in the relegation play-off spot.

Airdrieonians are bottom on 21 points with Dunfermline six ahead on 27. Hamilton are eighth on 28 points.

The East End Park club sacked Michael Tidser after just eight games in charge.

Tidser only tasted victory in one of his matches in the dugout and the Pars have only won four in 13 since the start of January.

Defeats to Airdrie at the end of January, Hamilton last month and then Raith Rovers in the Fife derby last week have pushed the Pars towards the drop.

John McLaughlan took interim charge immediately before Tidser, following the dismissal of previous boss James McPake after almost three years at the helm.

Lennon had been in talks with the Fife outfit’s board for the past two days.

And he has signed a short-term deal until the end of the season with the club with the challenge of keeping them up.

He has been out of work since an ill-fated stint at Rapid Bucharest in Romania, in which he only lasted six games (five draws, one loss).

His last job in Scotland was his second spell with Celtic, from which he was sacked in February 2021 after a loss to Ross County that effectively destroyed their ten-in-a-row hopes.

The former Hibs, Bolton Wanderers and Omonia Nicosia boss had emerged as a surprise favourite for the Barnsley job earlier this month.

But once the interest from Dunfermline became apparent, it seems the 53-year-old was keen to push through a return to management in Scotland.

He was also previously linked with the Motherwell job before it went to Michael Wimmer.

Lennon’s first match as boss is sure to draw a crowd – with him taking on a very familiar face.

None other than his former captain at Celtic, Scott Brown, will be in the opposite dugout when Dunfermline travel to Ayr United on March 29.
