WWE history is filled with fights that turned serious and went off-script. One such example is when Randy Savage, also known as Macho Man, and Jake Roberts came face to face on October 21st, 1991.
Jake Roberts was never a fan of Macho Man, but things exceeded limits when, during a televised segment of WWF, Roberts unleashed a de-venomized cobra on Savage.
What actually happened in the match between Jake Roberts and the Macho Man
Roberts and Savage always shared a sour relationship. The Macho Man, on multiple occasions, was attacked by Roberts on the entrance ramp. He would make surprise appearances to ruin Savage’s matches, even threaten his wife Liz.

Things exceeded all expectations when the un-thinkable happened: Roberts released his snake on Savage, and it turned out to be one of the most bizarre fights in the history of the promotion.
Though the entire act was already pre-planned, things went serious when Roberts’ cobra Lucifer locked on and refused to let go of the Macho Man’s hand.
The Macho Man opens up about the aftermath of the snake bite
Savage went on to open up about the nightmare he went through that day and the aftereffects of the painful bite.
“My arm blew up like a balloon for days,” Randy Savage later remembered. About five days later, they had to rush me to the hospital with a 104-degree fever. It’s unbelievable to walk into the hospital and tell the doctor I had a snake bite.”
The Macho Man also revealed that he slowly went towards recovery, but things were not the same for Lucifer the snake as it died 12 days later.

“Finally, the fever went down. They gave me antibiotics, and luckily the snake WAS de-venomized, but twelve days later, the snake died. He was de-venomized, but maybe I wasn’t!”
This proves that even though WWE bouts are scripted, things can easily go wrong and even result in injuries, which one can sustain during actual fights.
WWE matches that turned into real fights
There are several instances in WWE’s history when fights go off-script and take a dramatic turn towards reality. This often results to severe injuries
One example of wrestlers battling out for real in the WWE was when Vader faced Ken Shamrock for the first time in 1997. During the bout, Ken threw several punches at his opponent, resulting in Vader’s broken nose. But he did not take it likely. Vader responded by throwing a lariat and almost knocking out Shamrock.

Taz and Sabu, two of the biggest names in the history of ECW, also engaged in an actual bout inside the squared circle.
The duo forgot the script and started throwing punches at each other, which resulted in a broken nose for Sabu. The reason behind the drift can be traced back to an argument about how to book the match.
