Mortal Kombat 2: Everything We Know So Far

Get ready to hear those iconic two words again – “Finish Him!” The brutal fighting franchise that had us all button-mashing in arcades back in the day is gearing up for another bloody tournament, and honestly, we couldn’t be more excited.

Mortal Kombat 2 is finally happening, and after the mixed reception of the 2021 reboot, this sequel might just be the redemption story we’ve all been waiting for. Warner Bros. Pictures has greenlit what promises to be an absolute spectacle, complete with the long-awaited introduction of Johnny Cage (yes, finally!).

With test screenings reportedly getting fans as hyped as they were for Avengers: Endgame – and that’s saying something – this sequel could be the film that actually nails the video game adaptation formula.

The tournament begins with Karl Urban as Johnny Cage

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room – or should we say, the cocky Hollywood actor who wasn’t in the room last time. Karl Urban stepping into Johnny Cage’s iconic sunglasses is probably the best casting news we’ve heard in ages.

If you watched the first film and wondered where the hell Johnny Cage was, you weren’t alone. Director Simon McQuoid basically admitted they left him out because his “giant personality” would’ve stolen the show, which, let’s be honest, is exactly what we want from Johnny Cage.

But Urban isn’t the only exciting addition to this testosterone-fueled roster. We’re getting Adeline Rudolph as Kitana and Tati Gabrielle as Jade, which means we’ll finally see some of the franchise’s most badass female fighters in action. Plus, Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn? That’s some inspired casting right there – the guy’s built like a literal mountain.

Writer Jeremy Slater has been teasing that they’re going full weird with this one, embracing all the ridiculous, over-the-top elements that make Mortal Kombat so gloriously unhinged. And based on those test screening reactions where fans were apparently losing their minds, it sounds like they’ve nailed it.

Returning warriors and new threats

Don’t worry – your favorites from the first film aren’t going anywhere. Jessica McNamee’s back as the no-nonsense Sonya Blade, Ludi Lin returns as Liu Kang (hopefully with more to do this time), and Hiroyuki Sanada continues to be absolutely perfect as Scorpion. Even Lewis Tan’s Cole Young is returning, despite some fans’ mixed feelings about the original character created for the films.

Here’s where things get really interesting though – Joe Taslim is back as Bi-Han, but now he’s fully transformed into Noob Saibot. If you know the games, you know this is going to be absolutely brutal. The guy was already terrifying as Sub-Zero, so imagine him as a vengeful wraith with nothing left to lose.

The real meat of this sequel is finally giving us the tournament that was teased in the first film. Slater has mentioned that a huge part of his job was figuring out

who fights who during the tournament and who comes out on top in the battle for Earth Realm.

As someone who admits to spending way too many quarters on Mortal Kombat arcade machines as a kid, the writer seems genuinely invested in getting this right. And honestly, that personal connection to the source material gives us hope that this isn’t just another cash-grab sequel.

Mark your calendars, fight fans – October 24, 2025 is when we’ll finally get to see if this sequel lives up to the hype. Unlike the first film’s pandemic-era release that split between theaters and HBO Max, this one’s getting the full theatrical treatment it deserves. There’s something poetic about experiencing those bone-crunching fatalities on the big screen with a crowd of fellow fans.

But here’s the really exciting part – this isn’t just a one-and-done sequel. Joe Taslim has revealed he’s actually contracted for four more Mortal Kombat films, which suggests Warner Bros. is serious about building a proper franchise this time.

Co-writer Greg Russo has even mapped out his vision as a trilogy: the first film as a tournament prequel, this sequel as the main event, and a third film dealing with the aftermath.

There’s also talk of standalone films focusing on characters like Johnny Cage and Bi-Han, which could be absolutely incredible if done right. The Mortal Kombat universe is rich enough to support multiple storylines, and honestly, after decades of mediocre video game adaptations, it’s refreshing to see a studio actually investing in the long-term potential of a franchise.

With all the buzz this sequel is generating months before release, we might finally be entering the golden age of Mortal Kombat cinema.
