Modoc National Forest Prepares for Lightning Risks and Fire Safety Tips

6/7/2025 Modoc NF: Modoc County, Lassen County, and Siskiyou County
The Modoc NF fire organization is preparing for the expected chances of lightning over the next few days. Fire management has advised that, in addition to our local forest resources, additional off-forest resources will be hosted on the forest. The extra resources will ensure a quick response to any new fires that start caused by lightning, helping to keep them small.
Any new fire starts, if they occur, will be reported on our page as information becomes available. Some Lightning Safety tips if you plan on being outdoors:
Avoid open fields, the top of a hill or a ridge top.
Stay away from tall, isolated trees or other tall objects. If you are in a forest, stay near a lower stand of trees.
If you are in a group, spread out to avoid the current traveling between group members.
If you are camping in an open area, set up camp in a valley, ravine or other low area. Remember, a tent offers NO protection from lighting.
Stay away from water, wet items, such as ropes, and metal objects, such as fences and poles. Water and metal do not attract lightning but they are excellent conductors of electricity. The current from a lightning flash will easily travel for long distances.
