Daredevil: Born Again started premiering on March 4, 2025, on Disney+ and has received a positive response from the audience and the critics. Critics in their reviews have noted that the series from Marvel Television has exceeded the expectations of the viewers of Daredevil and were pleased to see the series focusing on the characters a little more. However, it has been noted that Daredevil: Born Again’s original plan did not include a fan-favorite character.

Director Jeffrey Nachmanoff breaks down episode 4 of Daredevil: Born Again

One of the highly awaited moments for the fans of Daredevil: Born Again is the reunion of Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle and Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock. Episode 4 showcases how Murdock who is on a mission to find who killed Hector Ayala with a bullet emblazoned with the Punisher’s skull insignia, tracks down the Punisher himself.

The reunion between Matt Murdock and Frank Castle is not exactly a happy one as Frank Castle rushes at Matt Murdock and starts to question him. Cox’s character tells Castle that he can help people if he just lets go of his victim mentality and it infuriates him.

But Frank Castle understands that Matt Murdock is still grieving the death of his best friend Foggy Nelson and he tells him while crying that it’s unfair that Nelson’s dead while his killer Bullseye is alive in the jail.

The mention of Foggy Nelson’s name makes Murdock angry and he punches Castle before apologizing. The two of them reconcile and part ways. Director Jeffrey Nachmanoff recently spoke to Brandon Davis for his Phase Hero: A Film & TV Podcast about the much-awaited reunion between the two characters. He said,

That’s a case where the scene had already been shot for a later episode and it was only after we had done the things together that the producers realized that ‘Oh you know what, that scene should happen all the way back here’.

He explained further that David Feige realized that they needed to put a few other pieces but they didn’t have Bernthal so they shot a few parts just with Charlie Cox which needed to be added.

The director noted that the audience would never get to know which were the scenes that were added to their reunion.

Jon Bernthal opens up about returning as The Punisher in Daredevil: Born Again

Ardent fans of The Punisher had been waiting for the return of Jon Bernthal in Daredevil: Born Again and in episode 4 he did. In his conversation with EW, the actor shared that he considers his character’s appearance on the show as just a toe dip of the reintroduction to the character. He added,

It was like, ‘Let’s see if this works. Let’s see if there’s a real openness and a hunger to let Frank be what Frank is, which is dark enough to have the courage and the boldness to turn your back on the audience and to make it difficult, to make it enormously psychologically complex and to steer away from any cuteness or humor and to really go full bore.

It has been known that in addition to Daredevil: Born Again season 2, Marvel Studios are very keen on giving The Punisher his own standalone series. Jon Bernthal dwelled upon the same thought and said that he felt like it had opened the door to get closer to the Frank Castle that he wanted to portray since its inception.

The actor shared with the publication that initially when he was approached for the part, it felt less connected to the lore of Daredevil. He commented further,

Ultimately, I didn’t see it. I didn’t see the version of Frank and what they wanted from Frank didn’t really make sense to me and I thought would not appeal to the fans and wouldn’t be congruent.

Bernthal shared that the vision of the character did not align and he eventually decided to walk away. But new writers were hired for Daredevil: Born Again and so the showrunner and the actor collaborated on developing the character. He noted that the studios brought him into the conversation and they got specific about where Frank Castle was psychologically and physically.

The actor mentioned that sometimes individuals have to be very clear with their intentions in the business and cannot get confused with the ideas. Especially when they are portraying their favorite character.
