‘Materialists’ Ending Explained: Who Does Dakota Johnson Choose?

Dakota Johnson’s character, Lucy, is faced with an impossible decision throughout Materialists — choosing between Chris Evans’ charming character, John, and Pedro Pascal‘s flirty character, Harry.

At the end of the A24 rom-com, Lucy makes her big decision about which guy she wants to be with, which may be controversial to some and tug at the heartstrings of others.

Lucy, a New York City-based matchmaker, attends the wedding of one of her matches who ended up successfully finding love. It’s there that she meets Pascal’s Harry, the brother of the groom. While Harry is very flirty and flaunts his wealth, Lucy suggests that he should become a client of her matchmaking agency, Adore.

At the same wedding, John, Lucy’s ex-boyfriend, is in attendance as one of the cater waiters. He also says that he dabbles in acting. The pair chat about how their relationship ended mostly due to arguments about finances.

Due to subletting her apartment, Lucy goes to stay with John. They go upstate together and attend a wedding where they share a steamy kiss. Lucy admits that her desire for financial security hindered their relationship the first time around, but it’s obvious they still have chemistry.

Is There a Post-Credit Scene at the End of ‘Materialists’?

The film features a post-credit scene where Lucy and John fill out the documents required to obtain their marriage license at the city clerk’s office.

“I wanted it to be like the DMV, which it is. You want it to look like a security-camera DMV. That’s kind of how City Hall is. I got married in City Hall,” director Celine Song told IndieWire in a June 2025 interview. “It’s both the most romantic place on Earth and the least romantic place on Earth. That contradiction I was so interested in. Everybody who wants to get married in New York City, they have to go there.”
