A MAJOR motorway has closed after a car reportedly smashed through a barrier and left several injured in a horror crash.
The M60 is closed in both directions between J15 (M61) and J16 (Swinton) in Greater Manchester following the collision – with drivers facing huge delays.
The closure is likely to remain in place for some time, according to National Highways.
In a post on X, the company said: “The #M60 in #GreaterManchester remains closed both ways between J15 (#M61) & J16 (#Swinton) due to a serious multi-vehicle collision.
“Anti-clockwise traffic had been stopped to allow the closure to be implemented at J16 but has now been released. Traffic should start moving now.”
Drivers have been advised to account for extra travel time – and are being diverted via alternative routes.
What is the diversion?
Clockwise traffic is being diverted via the solid diamond diversion symbol on road signs
- Exit the M60 clockwise at J15 and join the M61 northbound
- Exit the M61 at the A666 junction and join the A666 northbound
- At the Kearsley Interchange roundabout, take the third exit onto the A666 southbound (Bolton Road) and continue on this road to then re-join the M60 clockwise at J16
Anti-clockwise traffic is being diverted via the hollow square symbol on road signs
- Exit the M60 anti-clockwise at J16 and turn right at the junction to join the A666 northbound
- Continue on the A666 Manchester Road/Bolton Road northbound until the Kearsley Interchange roundabout
- Turn left and continue on the A666(M) and then join the M61 southbound
- Continue south on the M61 and then merge onto the M60 anti-clockwise to continue onward journey
