‘Lazarus’ Has Nowhere Near Enough Time to Properly Conclude Its Story

Lazarus was an extremely anticipated series of 2025. With none other than Shinichiro Watanabe directing the series, and Chad Stahelski (of John Wick fame) assisting with the action sequences, the fans braced themself for an amazing combat-filled story.

They did get their wish fulfilled, except there wasn’t much of a story there. A lot of new plotlines, political intrigue, and even the Intelligence Unit of the Army intervened. But the main story didn’t seem to progress much.

Axel’s parkour and team Lazarus running around hitting dead ends felt pointless. As they finally got to the point and revealed Axel’s past, it seems to be far too late.

There’s just too much left to do in Lazarus

After weeks of dense philosophical monologues, a lot of complex ideas being floated around, dangerous missions that were completely pointless, and a lot of chaotic action, the viewers are still scratching their heads, confused.

There is a lot happening in Lazarus, and most of it seems to have nothing to do with the ongoing crisis and finding the cure to make sure that the impending doom is halted.

Yet, after ten episodes, Lazarus reveals everything in minutes, making the fans feel like the time and emotional investment is not at all proportional to the pay-off that they finally got. Even if they did get straight to the point, there is a massive staggering problem that the series is facing- there are only three episodes left.

For a story that has barely begun to untangle its core mystery (and there are many questions left unanswered), Lazarus has to completely develop and conclude several character arcs, give the fans an epic final battle, find and give the cure to the people, and save the world.

The plot is still juggling the morality of Project Lazarus, the motivations behind Dr. Skinner, and the role of the Lazarus agents in stopping doomsday. With so many threads left open, there is no way that the story can put a satisfying end to all of them.

A rushed or ambiguous ending will be an injustice to the story

Even if the series rushes the remaining plot at a breakneck pace, the emotional and philosophical payoffs that Lazarus was so meticulously placed (taking a lot of time) will not be sufficiently satisfying.

At this point, the best fans can hope for is an extended epilogue or a massive time-skip. It is possible that after saving the world (the definite outcome), the characters will be shown living normal, happy lives, which could be closure to their character arcs in a way.

Axel might be seen relaxing, for instance, and not any of that parkour and running around that he has been seen doing in all series. The world might still be coping with the extreme ideas of the scientists and Project Lazarus.

The evolution of man can be a slow and natural one. This glimpse of a calm world could be after a time-jump in weeks, months, or even years, to gloss over the long-term outcomes of the conflict.

Relying on an epilogue to carry emotional weight is always a gamble. Lazarus has spent most of its runtime establishing a high-stakes, dystopia world with a lot of complexities related to the plot. The odds are not in the show’s favor. Fans are already frustrated and just want it to end normally, even if it isn’t great.

You can currently stream Lazarus on Crunchyroll.
