“Kripke knew that from the beginning”: Jensen Ackles Talks the Main Reason Why the Winchester Brothers Did Not Disappoint for 15 Long Years

Supernatural was one of the longest-running television shows that captivated fans all over the world. More than Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki’s on-screen charm as the Winchester brothers, the success of the series was determined by several factors.

Not a lot of enduring series conclude on a good note—some of these have started to annoy fans that the only option left is to wrap up the story for good. For Supernatural, the finale was the perfect way to end their story. Despite the mixed reviews, the nostalgia of the show was pretty prominent.

Jensen Ackles reveals how Supernatural maintained success even after 15 seasons

Jensen Ackles pretty much dedicated a large chunk of his life and career to Supernatural playing Dean Winchester. Fans were initially drawn into the series created by Eric Kripke because of the monsters, but the actor said that the viewers stayed because of the Winchester brothers. Speaking with Showbiz Cheat Sheet, the 47-year-old actor said:

Kripke took these two brothers and he put them into a world where they could fight monsters and tell a horror movie every week. What people then gravitated to more than just the world that these two brothers were in was this relationship that these two brothers had. Kripke knew that from the beginning.

It’s incredibly surprising that the show creator originally did not plan to have the brothers in the story. The original outline for Supernatural was simply a horror show about urban myths and legends, and Sam and Dean’s story came later on by accident.

Kripke initially planned a journalist chasing after monsters across the country, but Warner Bros didn’t like the idea. Good thing he had a backup version with two brothers as the lead characters and the rest is history.

Ackles believed fans loved Sam and Dean because they were essentially just regular guys thrown into a world of otherworldly creatures. He said that the series would not last for a decade and a half if it weren’t for the little details that make up the bigger picture. He talked about the towns their characters visited down to the kind of clothes they wore—they all painted the image of two brothers in a backroad Americana story.

While it’s intriguing to see the version of Supernatural with the journalist as lead, Kripke’s decision to go with the Winchester brothers proved to be wise. The studio did a wonderful job establishing Sam and Dean as the core of the story, making them a part of a cultural phenomenon that shaped fans’ viewing habits.

As for the show’s ending, Ackles believes he won’t ever say goodbye to Dean as the character will always be with him for the rest of his life.

Supernatural is currently available to watch on Max.
