Former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, is pushing back against an $18 million defamation ruling in a U.S. court, seeking a reduction in damages awarded to investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
Agyapong’s legal team has filed a motion in the Superior Court of New Jersey, urging the court to reconsider the jury’s decision and adjust the damages.
They argue that while jury verdicts carry weight, courts have the authority to review and modify awards deemed excessive.
The lawsuit stems from Agyapong’s public allegations against Anas, which led to a legal battle culminating in a substantial judgment in favour of the journalist. Now, Agyapong’s lawyers insist the damages should be reassessed, calling for a more balanced outcome.
Meanwhile, Anas Aremeyaw Anas has spoken out after securing a $18 million defamation victory over Kennedy Agyapong in the Essex County Superior Court in New Jersey.
“This decision is not merely a legal triumph—it is a resounding affirmation that falsehood and character assassination have no place in our society,” Anas stated.
He emphasized that the ruling proves justice works when due process is followed, contrasting it with his failed lawsuit in Ghana in 2018. “Despite Mr. Agyapong’s own admission of lacking evidence, Justice Eric Baah denied me justice and even portrayed me—the plaintiff—as a criminal,” he recalled.
Anas credited the fairness of the US system for his victory, noting that Agyapong presented the same ‘Who Watches the Watchman’ evidence he used in Ghana but still lost unanimously.
“This outcome proves that the truth prevails and that accountability must extend to everyone, regardless of their position or influence,” he asserted.
Sending a strong message to politicians, he warned, “You cannot take the media for granted. The press plays an indispensable role in scrutinizing power and holding leaders accountable.”
