Kazuya Deserved Every Bit of His Fate in ‘Rent-a-Girlfriend’

Social media has been fuming in rage ever since the latest chapter in Rent-a-Girlfriend dropped yesterday. Never before has a romance manga single-handedly upset a whole community quite like this one just did. Like, how can you justify a romance series that ran for around 8 years ending with a rejection arc?

While on one hand, this outcome made most of the loyal readers go insane, leaving them with a feeling of betrayal, another spectrum of the same fandom is calling it quite deserved. And if you really look at it from a critical, neutral perspective, the rejection Kazuya got is actually fitting for someone like him. But was it even intentional by the author?

An absolute imbecile like Kazuya didn’t deserve any better

The dude is a total disgrace to the entire male population. If the series had been a compilation of things you must not do to have a girlfriend, it might have been a masterpiece. But it surely wasn’t trying to do any of that.

In fact, with its last 50-ish chapters, the author even attempted to make us feel sympathetic for Kazuya, and that might’ve also worked on many. But deep down, it’s always been obvious what a trash personality our boy, Kazuya, has.

Despite being the MC of the series, he never gets excused from the constant hate train the readers shower him with. The dude doesn’t have any future goals, always daydreams about a girl who’s clearly out of his league, and so, he even attempts to rent her as his fake girlfriend! Then, guess what?

He even goes to the lengths of actually expecting an actual relationship from it! Does he have no self-respect whatsoever? How can a human being stoop this low? And it’s not like he’s ever serious about having Mizuhara and actually taking responsibility.

Just because he has spent almost all his life saving, trying to get Mizuhara’s approval, doesn’t entitle him to have her feelings. You cannot force someone to fall for you unless it comes naturally from them. First of all, why would you even spend that much money so casually?

Also, the fact that Mizuhara’s personality is essentially written as a love interest from the author’s perspective might be another reason why people are calling it a deserving conclusion. Then how come the author himself sabotaged his own fantasy?

Ironically, the author ended up giving a fitting conclusion to the current arc

There shouldn’t be much surprise knowing that even the author of Rent-a-Girlfriend gets as much hate as Kazuya, if not more. Like, how can you excuse a man who can write a lowly character like Kazuya? Fans even used to wonder if the author somehow reflected himself in the series!

Whatever it may be, this recent outcome with the entire rejection thing is actually getting little positive feedback as well, which has been in favor of the author. Despite the rejection after 380 chapters and 8 years of runtime, fans are calling this outcome quite deserved.

But this may also bring some concerns regarding whether it was ever intentional. The author might have done all this just to troll his own audience, because maybe he knew it’d totally piss everyone off. In fact, as the author of a series named “Rent-a-Girlfriend“, that would be the most sensible thing for him to do, would it not?

The Rent-a-Girlfriend manga is currently available to read on Kodansha USA.
