The Apothecary Diaries has come with another great episode that shocked and also mesmerized fans. Not only did we get an intense sequence where assassins were trying to kill Jinshi, but we also witnessed some unexpected romantic moments between our two protagonists.
Episode 11 of The Apothecary Diaries season 2 makes it clear right away that Jinshi will finally reveal his true identity to Maomao. This is because he must take her to a hunting competition where he is likely going as the King’s brother and cannot hide his identity anymore.
However, rather than focusing on this revelation, the episode takes a wild turn with people targeting Jinshi, that too with a gun. This came out of nowhere because who could have gotten such an item in those times and dared to use it against one of the most powerful people in the Kingdom?
The introduction of a gun in The Apothecary Diaries
When Jinshi revealed he would disclose his princely status to Maomao, no one would have thought something more astonishing could happen here. But, right from the time Jinshi stepped into Shishou’s territory, he knew something might go wrong in episode 11 of season 2.
There, he refused to eat any food or drink anything that was being offered to him. On top of that, we find a bunch of assassins planning to kill Jinshi and pulling out a flintlock gun instead of using a sword, which was the usual choice of weapon at that time.
So far, the only items of advanced technology that we see in The Apothecary Diaries have been very minimalistic. This included the monocle that Lakan used and the double-sided mirrors that were presented to the concubines of the King.

However, the sudden introduction of a gun, which is also modified to shoot very accurately, symbolizes a change in tide within the story. These are the warning signs of something bigger that is going to happen in the future.
Foreshadowing war and a very important arc
A direct assassination attempt on a Prince with a weapon that is not readily available can only happen if everything is orchestrated by an important person. Plus, this whole thing took place when Jinshi was visiting the Shi clan.
Thus, it is right to believe that the head of the Shi clan might have had something to do with this. There is also a chance that the next arc that would focus on Maomao getting kidnapped is directly linked to this assassination attempt.
A gun represents warfare, and that holds true as Jinshi leads the imperial army to save Maomao and put an end to the Shi clan’s coup against the Emperor. This arc will also reveal some deeper secrets about the previous Emperor and shed light on his connection with Shishou.
This is why the gun is actually used as a device to warn the audience of what is to come and to stay prepared. The previous Emperor’s atrocities have left a deep and tangled web, and this incident is only the beginning of its unraveling.
