Jinshi Made a Surprise Appearance in ‘The Apothecary Diaries’ Season 2 Episode 21

The Apothecary Diaries has been getting darker and darker with every episode. The latest episode highlighted the horror of Shenmei once again, and she has definitely made it to the list of the top 10 most hated anime villains. At the same time, Jinshi’s surprise appearance made for a bit of comic relief.

Being the other main character of the series, Jinshi is frequently featured. However, the latest episodes have been more about the other characters and the Shi clan, and Jinshi’s appearances have been getting scarcer. Thankfully, the series solved the problem before it had gotten out of hand.

Jinshi’s surprise appearance in The Apothecary Diaries‘ latest episode was hilarious

One might be wondering where on Earth Jinshi appears in the episode? Well, his appearance is very imminent on closer inspection. In the episode, Loulan suggested that Maomao be sent to her death via Taibon, a cruel method that involved the release of poisonous insects, frogs, and snakes on the imprisoned.

Loulan knew that Maomao would be good at handling poisonous animals and deliberately suggested the method instead of letting her freeze in water. Once she was led to a dungeon and the box was popped open, out hopped Jinshi! But fear not, because Maomao is already trained to handle him by now.

If you still haven’t figured out the reference, pop back to episode 35 of the series. You might find the scene in which Maomao finds a frog in Jinshi’s pocket.

Ever since then, ‘a little frog’ has almost become a silly euphemism for fans to refer to Jinshi. So in the latest episode, when a poisonous frog hopped out of the supposedly dreaded box, fans were overjoyed to see a Jinshi cameo.

The dungeon scene was much-needed comic relief in the episode

The latest episode began with more exploration into how abusive Shenmei is. Even a child like Kyou-u knew that he had to rescue Maomao. The result of his attempt, however, was disastrous. Maomao quickly realized that Shenmei didn’t remotely care about justice or anything of the sort; she only liked to see people suffer.

In the midst of the chaos, Maomao creating food out of poisonous snakes was the comic highlight. When the guard returned, fully expecting to retrieve a dead body, he instead found Maomao enjoying a luxurious lunch.

Maomao wasn’t even phased, and her excited voice and murderous eyes made the perfect repose from the otherwise dim situation.

However, the series then got darker than it had ever been. The emperor’s army was on its way to quench the rebellion, and Loulan knew that the outcome would not turn out well for her clan.

Thus, she helped all the servants and workers escape with some money, but worse fate awaited the children at the fortress. Overall, it was a grim episode, with only Jinshi’s small appearance as the high point.

The Apothecary Diaries anime is currently available to watch on Crunchyroll.
