It’s a Shame James Cameron Still Hasn’t Cast Ben Stiller in Avatar After He Turns Into a Na’vi at Oscars

James Cameron’s Avatar 3 will make its way to the cinemas this December, and with its star-studded cast, many fans might still be wondering why comedian Ben Stiller is not yet a part of the project, especially after he transformed himself into a Na’vi at the 2010 Oscars event.

His amazing makeup at the said event definitely warrants him a place in the movie, but of course, it was only a way to pay homage to Cameron’s highly successful franchise as well as add some fun during that night’s awarding ceremony.

Ben Stiller’s hilarious and unforgettable Avatar spoof at the Oscars

Ben Stiller surprised the crowd at the 82nd Academy Awards in 2010 when he came out from the backstage wearing a black suit while sporting a Na’vi makeup. His iconic stare, which lasted for a couple of seconds, immediately sent the audience laughing out loud.

He spoke in Na’vi language and later translated it: “That means, ‘This seemed like a better idea in rehearsal.’ It was between this and the Nazi uniform, but the show seemed a little Hitler-heavy so…” Following his witty introduction, he mentioned that he’s presenting the award for Best Makeup, pausing for a bit to let his sarcastic remark sink in.

Then, he took a jab at James Cameron’s film and mentioned how ironic it was that Avatar was not even a contender for the category. Funnily, Stiller wished he should have just worn his Spock ears because Star Trek was nominated—even admitting he owned two pairs, but he realized that the Avatar style looked cooler. The comedian also made Na’vi s*x jokes that sent the crowd into roaring laughter.

In the end, he announced Star Trek as the winner, with Barney Burman, Mindy Hall, and Joel Harlow receiving the coveted accolade. It was a momentous awarding presentation, and Stiller made it even more memorable with his spoof. Interestingly, Sacha Baron Cohen was originally tapped to do the skit, but he backed out as he didn’t want to unintentionally offend the director.

Perhaps Stiller was a better choice because he delivered his jokes seamlessly, although it remains a huge mystery as to how Cohen would have looked like as Na’vi.

Even though Avatar did not get a nod for Best Makeup, it earned nine nominations, including Best Director and Picture, later taking home the win for Best Art Direction, Cinematography, and Visual Effects.

The third installment in the Avatar film series is set to arrive before the Christmas holidays, which will give viewers a glimpse of a different side of Pandora as well as the introduction of the Ash People. The movie has been teased since the release of the second film, The Way of Water.

Cameron has plans to direct up to four more installments as long as fans continue to support the franchise.

Avatar is currently available to watch on Disney+.
