It happens – Prof. Agyeman-Duah defends Mahama’s IGP appointment

Former United Nations Governance Advisor, Professor Baffour Agyeman-Duah, has stated that there is nothing wrong with President John Mahama’s decision to appoint a new Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Speaking on Newsfile on Joy News, he emphasized that such changes are normal and have precedence globally.

“I find nothing wrong with the president changing the police IGP, and even the CDS if he decides to do so – it happens,” he said.

According to Prof. Agyeman-Duah, every new leader typically surrounds themselves with top officials who align with their vision.

“Any president coming into power will naturally want top officers who align with his vision of leadership. You cannot dispute that.

“Look at what has happened in the US and other countries. Every president must be very conscious and sensitive when making such moves because, if the wrong decisions are made, they can disrupt the system,” he added.

His comments come after President John Mahama, on the evening of March 13, appointed Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new IGP. The appointment was officially announced in a press release signed by Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

The statement read:
“President John Dramani Mahama has, in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the Inspector-General of Police.”
