Mark Hamill has long been the face of George Lucas’ Star Wars franchise. Debuting as Luke Skywalker in 1977, the actor has portrayed the celebrated character across six movies, with his last appearance being in 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.

While fans would love to see him again, the 73-year-old recently quashed rumors that he would be returning to the franchise in a new upcoming interview on Sunday Today with Willie Geist.

I don’t want to make a big PR pronouncement like ‘This is my decision.’ I’m just saying that it really felt like a conclusion. My character was given complete closure. I died, ironically by overdosing on the Force, I might point out.

Stated the Life of Chuck star as he explained the many rumors and reports about his ‘exit’ from the franchise.

I just think it’s time. I had my time. I’m really appreciative, but I’m really looking to the future for all these new projects. But I do know, when I mentioned anything about the space movies, it gets extra scrutiny, as opposed to me talking about anything else. I said that, and then I saw headlines, you know ‘Mark Hamill Quit Star Wars.’ Well, let me say: they haven’t asked me. It’s not like they said, ‘Please come back.’

The actor recalled how in 2017’s The Last Jedi, Luke Skywalker passed away after meddling with the Force. While he did appear as a spirit later on, the actor feels his character has been given complete closure and that the franchise should now continue without him. While he is really appreciative, Hamill feels he has had his time and is looking forward to new and different projects.

Hamill’s Star Wars career began with A New Hope (1977), where, at 25, he embodied the naive Luke Skywalker. He reprised the role in The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983), going on to pivot to Broadway and other ventures before eventually returning to the franchise.

He returned as Luke in The Force Awakens (2015), The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker, with de-aged cameos in The Mandalorian (2020) and The Book of Boba Fett (2022). Hamill even had voice roles as Darth Bane in The Clone Wars (2014) and EV-9D9 in The Mandalorian (2019).

Even though fans would love to see him again, either as Luke or in some other way, the actor feels that focus should shift on the future and all the new characters (via ComicBook.com). From a wide-eyed farm boy on Tatooine to a seasoned Jedi Master, Hamill’s evolution has mirrored the emotional heart of Lucas’ space opera franchise. His legendary role has helped shape one of the most beloved franchises in cinematic history, turning him into a cultural icon.

While Hamill has proven time and again in his career that he is more than just a Jedi, fans of the franchise will continue to associate him with Luke Skywalker for eons to come.

The Star Wars franchise is now available to stream on Disney+.
