Instead of Gifts, Itachi Should Get a Reality Check on His Birthday for What He Did to Sasuke

9th June is a big day for Itachi fangirls and fanboys. Why? Well, for Naruto fans, it is a celebratory day to remember the icon and the legend. He was born on this very day to Fugaku and Mikoto Uchiha.

Hailed as a Genjutsu prodigy, he was the youngest to achieve great feats. Be it graduating academy early on or his enlistment in the ANBU. His defection from Konoha and his subsequent actions made us empathize with him.

But don’t let this fool you, especially with what he did to Sasuke. It is indeed true that this character suffered in his way, yet this doesn’t excuse his wrongs against his brother, and here’s why he needs a reality check!

Itachi’s tragedy doesn’t excuse his wrongs against Sasuke

Itachi is one of the most popular characters in Naruto, and that goes without saying. He is considered a prodigy among the likes of Minato Namikaze. That’s because he achieved massive feats at an early age.

He graduated from the academy at the age of 7 and joined ANBU when he was 11. Eventually, he was made the ANBU captain at a mere age of 13. So much for being a prodigious shinobi, yet he wasn’t exempt from vices.

His loyalty to Konoha, for instance, proved detrimental for the most part. How? His brother shouldered the brunt as he descended into villainy. While he thought he was making Sasuke strong, in reality, he wasn’t.

Let’s not forget how he choked his 12-year-old brother. All to make his little brother strong, but the pretext shouldn’t distract you. The fact that he tortured the little guy by replaying his parents’ murder is beyond wicked.

This is one of the most contentious takes in the fandom. Some even called his tragic hero image an unnecessary retcon, but it is what it is. His actions shouldn’t be overlooked in any case.

Also, are we seriously going to forget how Sasuke was spiraling emotionally after Itachi’s death? It led to the latter following a destructive path. This shows that our birthday boy truly deserves a reality check.

If there’s one thing that Masashi Kishimoto did best, it was the complexity. This is especially the case with emotions, be it grief or trauma. Every character dealt with trauma differently, but Itachi capitalized on that one.

His torturing of Sasuke by replaying the death consistently was the final nail in the coffin. But this isn’t the first, especially with how he approached the whole situation. He stripped his brother of every last hope, which drove him insane.

Sasuke had no one to turn to. He defected from Konoha, became a war criminal, killed Danzo, and almost lost his sanity in the process. As if witnessing a massacre wasn’t enough for the young boy.

He terrified his young brother to the point that he could have lost his mental fortitude. Yes, being an elder brother came with its disadvantages. Sasuke didn’t deserve the hate when in reality, he suffered the most.

Naruto is currently available for streaming on Crunchyroll. The manga is currently available for reading on Shueisha’s Manga Plus app.
