“I had no idea this was happening and I am very much surprised by it.

“When I am out and about people will say ‘Marty Party’ before Marty Morrissey”.

However, the Scotsman’s upcoming tour, which includes Trinity College on July 6, is billed as The Love Is All Around Tour, after his biggest No 1 selling hit.

Marty Morrissey said he may have be have a word with his Scottish rival if he tried to perform dates in Ireland calling them ‘The Marti Party’.

Marty told us: “If Marti did gigs over here and called them Marti Parties. It would cause confusion and I’d have to talk to him.”

The sports pundit credits comedian Mario Rosenstock and Oliver Callan with coming up with The Marty Party tag.

Marty told us: “I came out of a pub one night in Clare very late and my phone exploded with a barrage of text messages saying you looked great on the Late Late Show.

“I didn’t know what the hell was going on until I learned that Mario had been on the Late Late in a pink shirt imitating me.

“Next it was Oliver Callan doing me saying ‘I’m Marty and I like to Party’.”

But the popular broadcaster said that it was his participating in Dancing With The Stars in 2018, which put The Marty Party through the roof.

He told us: “All the celebs dancing that year had our own WhatsApp group which was called The Marty Party.”

The popular broadcaster, who was back on RTE Radio One on the Bank Holiday, said he was a “big fan of Wet Wet Wet” and this was all news to him”.

He also said he never minded being imitated by Mario or Oliver.

Marty told us: “Years ago I had friends in RTE who weren’t too pleased about being imitated by Apres Match but I would tell them, imitation is the greatest form of flattery. . . little did I know that years later people would be doing impressions of me, Marty, and talking about The Marty Party.”
