James Gunn’s Superman will be making its big screen debut in just two months, and fans are waiting to see the latest iteration of the superhero on screen. David Corenswet’s Superman is not alone in his journey to find hope in humanity, as he will reportedly be joined by a myriad of DC characters such as Lois Lane, Hawkgirl, Green Lantern, and more.
One character who will not be on Superman’s side this time, though, is the Authority’s founding member, the Engineer a.k.a Angela Spica. Played by María Gabriela De Faría, the character seems to be a close ally of Lex Luthor. The actress mentioned in a recent interview that Spica may be close to Luthor in more ways than one.
Superman star María Gabriela De Faría theorized that her character and Lex Luthor slept together

Lex Luthor is Superman’s most formidable foe. An egoistic and narcissistic overachiever, Luthor finds Kal-El’s absolute power to be the source of his jealousy and hates him in every possible way. Nicholas Hoult plays the role in the upcoming James Gunn-directed Superman, making his debut as the incredible villain.
Joining Luthor in his quest to capture Kal-El is the Engineer, played by María Gabriela De Faría. The character is best known for her association with the superhero group The Authority, and it is still a mystery why she chose to align herself with Luthor in the movie. The Portuguese actress mentioned a theory that makes their alliance more biological.

María Gabriela De Faría mentioned in a podcast promoting the upcoming DCU big screen debut that she believed the Engineer and Lex Luthor shared an intimate relationship in the shadows. She said (via Max),
I also think that they have a secret relationship, and I kept telling James, like, I feel like they f*cked. And, like, Lex is so– you know, he’s so serious. And then he has this gorgeous, gorgeous girlfriend that he treats terribly. So I’m like, what if, like, you know, after hours, the Engineer gets really mean with Lex and he loves it.
While the comics have no mention of this relationship, María Gabriela De Faría stated that she played the character that way, with an undertone of a s*xual chemistry being shared with the famous villain.
Superman star reveals why the Engineer is aligned with Lex Luthor

The Engineer, a.k.a. Angela Spica, will be making her big screen debut with James Gunn’s Superman, and her first introduction to the mainstream will be in a villainous role while being aligned with Lex Luthor and his mission to destroy Superman. However, the character started out as a hero in the comics and is part of the Authority.
Spica is a gifted scientist who fuses her body with nanotechnology, replacing her blood with liquid metal, allowing her to create elements on the go. The trailer of Superman showed some parts of this superpower and also shows her fighting Kal-El in a baseball stadium, and attacking the Fortress of Solitude with Luthor.
Despite being a hero in the initial stages of her run in the comics, she is now more of an antihero. María Gabriela De Faría gave her reasons as to why the Engineer was aligned with Luthor in the movie. She said,
Angie really believes in this better world. And probably, she had some trauma when she was a kid that she felt the need to be part of that change…whatever that means and whatever she had to do to make it happen. So she is a good person at heart, that’s extremely broken, and is willing to team up with Lex to get rid of what he believes are evil aliens.
The Authority is set to make its big screen debut with Superman and will also reportedly be headlining their own movie sometime in the DCU.
Superman opens in cinemas on July 11, 2025.
