“I risk losing those moments”: George R.R. Martin Hates Giving The Winds of Winter Updates After Accidentally Revealing 1 Fan-Favorite Lannister Is Alive

However, Martin has previously expressed his reluctance to share updates about the next book in the series due to the fear that he might spoil some of the major plot developments, as previously happened with Tyrion Lannister’s storyline.

When George R.R. Martin inadvertently revealed too much about The Winds of Winter

George R.R. Martin’s highly anticipated book, The Winds of Winter, the next installment in A Song of Ice and Fire, has been delayed for over a decade, with A Dance with Dragons being the last book in the series so far, which was released in 2011.

And while the author is known for offering brief glimpses into the progress, he expressed his hesitation in continuing the practice after a 2022 interview.

Martin accidentally revealed major plot details about the beloved character Tyrion Lannister, portrayed by Peter Dinklage in the Emmy-winning TV series, in an interview with Game of Owns.

“I’m still struggling with this Tyrion chapter,” he said, as per Winter is Coming. “There’s a lot of Tyrion in this book. And I think I’m close to finishing the Tyrion arc in Winds of Winter,” he continued.

The author further shared,

I think this chapter and maybe one further chapter — I’ll be done with Tyrion’s role in this particular book. And then I’ll have to focus on another character, some of whom are also close, some of whom are not at all close. And then hopefully it all fits together.

However, after inadvertently revealing too much about Tyrion’s arc, Martin has become increasingly cautious about sharing further updates, wanting to preserve major plot twists for readers.

“Most of you know by now that I do not like to give detailed updates on WINDS,” he noted in a 2022 blog post. While confirming that he continues working on the book, Martin expressed concerns over the risk of spoiling major developments.

I love nothing more than to surprise my readers with twists and turns they did not see coming, and I risk losing those moments if I go into too much detail — Even saying that I am working on a Tyrion chapter, as I did last week, gives away the fact that Tyrion is not dead.

Martin also shared that he enjoyed reading sample chapters in the past but stopped after realizing, “If I had kept on with the readings, half the book might be out by now.”

“So I am not going to give you all any kind of detailed report on the book,” he continued. Though Martin has since largely avoided sharing details about the book’s progress, he recently offered a brief update, stating, “I have to finish the books,” as per Collider.

However, the author has yet again failed to provide a clear timeline for the release of The Winds of Winter, along with the final installment in the series, A Dream of Spring.
