I renovated my council house living room on a budget – all you need is a mirror and some ‘moody’ paint to transform it

SPRUCING up your home on a budget can be tricky, but there a few savvy tricks to get the luxe look for less.

That’s exactly what this DIY whizz discovered when she decided to spruce up the living room of her old council house.

The trim made the ‘average’ sized mirror appear to fit the space[/caption]

Becki, who posts on TikTok as @just_beckii, explained that all you really need to transform your space is an “average sized mirror” and some “moody paint.”

Since buying a large mirror would’ve been above her budget, she decided instead to buy one slightly smaller and use a savvy trick to make it appear to fit the space above her fireplace.

In the viral video, Becki showed off her “crusty” living room, which was in need of a revamp.

So, Becki landed on a dark grey colour to give it the “moody” look she wanted – but something was still missing.

That’s when she found a round mirror with a gold frame from Dunelm to reinvent the space.

Using some wooden trim, Becki then cut them down to size to create some moulding around the mirror.

“I’m hoping by giving it a magical trim it will give the illusion it’s packing more than it actually is,” she explained.

The simple DIY task started with her hanging the mirror in the middle of the wall, then measuring the size of the wooden trim.

Once she was happy with the size of the trim, it was time to stick it to the wall, add some caulk, and paint it to match the walls.

After showing off the before and after, fellow DIY fans were impressed by the trick.

One said: “Such a difference in that room! Well done!”

And a second agreed: “Wow it really showcases your fireplace.”

“It’s so simple but makes such a big difference to the impact of the fireplace. I’m definitely filing that one away in my brain,” a third commented on the clip.

“This is such a great idea. I love how it adds an accent without being overstated,” another wrote.

But the simple hack isn’t the only way to spruce up your home for less.

MORE TRICKS TO SPRUCE UP YOUR HOME ON A BUDGET

Freshen up your grouting

Over time, the grouting in your bathroom or kitchen will start to discolour – and there’s not much you can do to avoid it.

But rather than replace your tiles altogether, the experts at Toolstation suggest reviving your grout.

“Grout reviver is easy to apply and can be picked up for less than a fiver,” they told Fabulous, and your bathroom will look as fresh as ever.

Change bathroom light pulls

There’s nothing more off-putting than a grimy, discoloured ceiling switch pull cord – if you have them, that is.

But for roughly £2 each, they can easily be replaced, and you’ll be amazed by the impact.

Replace cupboard handles

Toni Trevillion, author of DIY On A Budget, who also founded a Facebook group of the same name, says new cupboard handles can completely change the look of your space.

“You can go from modern to traditional or vice-versa,” she told Fabulous.

“Use colours that contrast with the units, or make them all different for a truly original look.”

Update your fixtures

You might not think much of your toilet roll holder or even a soap dispenser, but Toni says it’s all in the details.

“Your bathroom fixtures can help complete the look you’re going for or update your bathroom to your unique style or to give it a modern lift and feel,” she said.

These small changes – including your loo roll holder, toothbrush holders, shelves or dispenser holders – will not only give your bathroom a lift but will help tie it all together.
