Top Chef has been taking the culinary and cooking show genre by storm with talented chefs showcasing their flavors and techniques. Every year thousands try out their luck, but only a few get this golden opportunity to win the coveted title.
Those who do get through try their hardest to stand out from the crowd, but some take this to a whole new level, that too in a negative light. For Season 10 of Top Chef, this was John Tesar.

While his cooking talents were undeniable, his brash attitude was at times downright insufferable. But when he returned for Top Chef: Charleston, which was the 14th season of the show, he came as a changed man. But there was another contestant who was the real villain in his story.
Not John Tesar, but Katsuji Tanabe was the real villain of Top Chef

Apart from his cooking skills and techniques, John Tesar is also known as one of the most controversial participants of Top Chef. He is often remembered for his strong opinions and was frequently at odds with fellow contestants. This obviously rubbed the fans and fellow contestants the wrong way.
While his attitude was definitely not something everyone had hoped for, others played the game just as hard, if not harder.
After he was eliminated from Season 10, he came back for Season 14, but this time with a changed attitude. He had a different approach to the game and seemed more self-aware this time. The same was posted on Reddit as well.

His redemption arc was in full swing, and he also made his way to the finale as well. But fellow contestant Katsuji Tanabe emerged as the real antagonist of his comeback.
When the same resurfaced on Reddit, one user shared his thoughts.

Both the chefs clashed almost immediately, and while Tesar was trying his level best to shake off his Season 10 image, Tanabe was more than happy to remind everyone of it. Tanabe played the role of the agitator, poking Tesar until he snapped. After witnessing this, even fans understood the real deal and started seeing him in a new light.
Of course, John Tesar’s journey didn’t end with Top Chef, and even outside the show, he managed to build a reputation as a talented chef. So, all in all, while he wasn’t the easiest to root for, he also wasn’t the worst. While some of his antics are definitely questionable, there’s no denying that he’s also a very talented chef with decades of experience to his name.
Kristen Kish details every part of her life in her memoir
While Tesar made things complicated, it was Kristen Kish who won Season 10 of Top Chef. Currently, she’s hosting the very show she once won, it feels like a true full-circle moment for her. Now, she has added another element to her resume and has penned her own memoir, dishing every detail of her life.

In an interview via People, she dived deeper into her memoir titled Accidentally on Purpose. In this, she has talked about her journey from being a Korean adoptee to winning the show and gaining huge popularity. She also mentioned why her path to culinary stardom has been anything but conventional.
She was born in South Korea but raised in Kentwood, Michigan; she discovered her love for cooking at a very young age. This led her to the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu in Chicago, after which she worked with some of the most talented chefs in the industry.
She first gained national attention when she won Top Chef in 2013 and, more than a decade later, returned to host the show in 2023 after the departure of Padma Lakshmi.
