Elden Ring 2 is not coming to reality anytime soon, as stated by none other than Hidetaka Miyazaki himself. And while this might seem like sad news, in all honesty, his statement makes me believe there is something better than the Elden Ring IP in the works, and it might just be the one franchise everyone wants to see returning.
While Miyazaki confirmed that there are no current plans for Elden Ring 2, he also revealed something far more interesting: multiple projects are underway at FromSoftware. And in his statement, for what seems more like a standard NDA response, there is a slight ray of hope for the fans of the Dark Souls franchise.
Hidetaka Miyazaki confirms Dark Souls 4, or did he really?

While Elden Ring has cemented itself as one of the greatest action RPGs of all time, its future as a franchise remains uncertain. Hidetaka Miyazaki, the legendary director behind the Souls genre, confirmed last year at the PlayStation Partner Awards 2024 Japan Asia event, as reported by IGN.
However, while the director has said FromSoftware doesn’t have any particular plans for Elden Ring 2, his comments further at the event have fans believing one of his old and missed franchises might just be making its way back.
I can’t talk about any unpublished work, but I do have several projects currently underway at FromSoftware, here are a variety of genres, so I hope you can look forward to it.
Given that Miyazaki made this comment last year, it can be understood that he might have been talking about Elden Ring Nightreign, and The Duskbloods as the ‘several projects underway’ at the studio. However, these both come under a similar genre, which has me believing the president of FromSoftware has a few more things up his sleeve.
Is Dark Souls coming back? Or is it another one of Hidetaka Miyazaki’s signature IPs?

For fans of FromSoftware’s legacy, the director’s cryptic statement feels like déjà vu. It’s a reminder of how Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was quietly in development while fans debated the future of Bloodborne. Naturally, all eyes have now turned to Dark Souls 4. The Dark Souls trilogy concluded in 2016 with what Miyazaki once called a “satisfying end,” but gaming franchises never truly die.
When Miyazaki says he can’t talk about something, it usually means it’s time to lean in and listen closely. FromSoftware thrives on secrecy, and the studio has repeatedly surprised fans with sudden reveals. Whether it’s Bloodborne 2, a new IP entirely, or the long-awaited Dark Souls 4, one thing is certain: something big is brewing.
