Since its premiere, How I Met Your Mother has become an iconic TV sensation. The series aired for nine seasons starting in 2005 and ending in 2014 while Ted Mosby told his children the long story of meeting their mother. The show portrayed five friends’ experiences in Manhattan while they dealt with adulthood, careers, and relationships in their lives.
HIMYM established its success through its different storytelling features as well as its humor combined with the undeniable bond among the lead characters. The show designed its plot structure in a non-linear way. Its memorable dialogue and brainchild concepts, such as “Bro Code”, lived on as pop culture references after the series.

However, fans of the show wonder about the fates of the original show members who portrayed these TV characters years after the series finale aired. Let’s take a look at what the main cast of HIMYM– Josh Radnor, Alyson Hannigan, Jason Segel, Neil Patrick Harris, Cobie Smulders, and Cristin Milioti- did after the show and what they are doing in 2025.
Josh Radnor

Josh Radnor portrayed the romantic character Ted Mosby in How I Met Your Mother who kept on searching for The One. After he hung up Ted’s blue French horn, Radnor developed his career in TV, films, and theater together with music.
Radnor’s television career includes appearances in Mercy Street and NBC’s Rise, with a notable turn playing the part of a Holocaust hunter in the Amazon Prime Video show Hunters. The actor has appeared on Grey’s Anatomy and delivered voice roles in TV animation projects.
After HIMYM ended, Radnor has worked in films like The Seeker, Social Animals, Three Birthdays, and All Happy Families, and he recently portrayed the central character in his 2025 comedy-drama Ramona at Midlife.
The actor also took his music seriously, as he performed with Ben Lee as the duo Radnor and Lee. Radnor continued his theater background by performing in The Babylon Line and also featured in Little Shop of Horrors and The Ally.
As far as his personal life is concerned, Radnor married psychologist Jordana Jacobs in January 2024 after they met during a sound meditation retreat. His co-star, Alyson Hannigan, was present as one of their wedding guests as well.
The musical tour activities of Radnor continue officially. In the coming days, Radnor will be seen hosting The People of the Book, a new show focusing on Jewish literature that will air in late 2025.
Alyson Hannigan

Through her role as kindergarten teacher Lily Aldrin on HIMYM, Alyson Hannigan delivered a mix of loving character traits that made the ensemble act complete. Marshall’s “terrible at keeping secrets” better half has remained hectic with her work since the show ended.
Hannigan continued to be active in TV by appearing in multiple shows like The McCarthys, Pure, and Outmatched. The actress performed hosting responsibilities on multiple programs like Penn & Teller: Fool Us, Outrageous Pumpkins, and Girl Scout Cookie Championship. After HIMYM ended, Segel worked in films like The End of the Tour, Our Friend, The Discovery, and Windfall with Jesse Plemons. Segel also provided voice work for Despicable Me 4. On AMC network, Segel established his anthology show Dispatches from Elsewhere while serving as the main star and as a writer, director, and executive producer.
Segel also worked as a creator, writer, and executive producer on Shrinking, which paired him with Harrison Ford as a consulting therapist. HBO Max viewers watched Segel portray basketball coach Paul Westhead in the popular show Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty.
Since breaking up with his long-standing relationship with photographer Alexis Mixter in 2021, Segel has started dating So You Think You Can Dance alum Kayla Randomski, and they appeared together at the Emmys in 2024. Segel will star with Samara Weaving in the upcoming thriller film The Trip and will be seen in the third season of Shrinking.
Neil Patrick Harris

Neil Patrick Harris created a lasting impression in HIMYM as Barney Stinson with his presentation of the suit-wearing, womanizing high-fiver. After the show ended, Harris established a successful career in entertainment through different platforms.
Through his TV work, Harris has shown his versatility by playing Count Olaf in Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events and appearing in Uncoupled and multiple shows such as American Horror Story: Freak Show, It’s a Sin, and Doctor Who.
The successful return of Barney to the screen happened when he appeared in two episodes of the How I Met Your Father spinoff series. The Academy Awards and Genius Junior made up some of his hosting credits, while he appeared as a judge and executive producer for Drag Me to Dinner.
Harris has also made some theater appearances in Into the Woods, Peter Pan Goes Wrong, Gutenberg! The Musical! and Sh*t. Meet. Fan. He also directed the theatrical performance Tick Tick… BOOM! After marrying David Burtka in 2014, Harris has become a dedicated parent to sons Gideon and Harper. His upcoming work includes the long-awaited Anita film, co-starring in Sunny Dancer with Bella Ramsey, and featuring in Dexter: Resurrection.
Cobie Smulders

Cobie Smulders portrayed Canadian news anchor Robin Scherbatsky, where she showed both powerful and emotional aspects of the character. Since leaving How I Met Your Mother, the actress has extended her career with popular work in Marvel Cinematic Universe projects.
Smulders has become a long-standing S.H.I.E.L.D. agent through her portrayal of Maria Hill in movies like the Avengers franchise, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Disney+ series Secret Invasion and What If…? Outside Marvel Studios, she worked on Jack Reacher: Never Go Back and The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part as well as several other films.
Her television work has been a lot since the show ended. She has worked in A Series of Unfortunate Events, Nature Cat, Friends from College, Arrested Development, Stumptown, The Simpsons, Impeachment: American Crime Story, and became the first main HIMYM cast member to return for How I Met Your Father. She recently appeared in Shrinking together with Jason Segel.

Milioti has successfully gained multiple television roles, such as headlining A to Z and appearing in acclaimed anthology programs Fargo and Black Mirror, while also doing guest appearances on The Mindy Project and The Simpsons.
HBO Max granted two seasons of the television show Made for Love before she joined Peacock’s mystery comedy series The Resort in 2022. Her most recent work consists of appearing in HBO’s The Penguin, which helped her establish a broader footprint in high-quality TV shows.
Her film career reached a major milestone through Palm Springs, which proved to be her breakout romantic time-loop comedy film success. Among her film works, Milioti also appeared in It Had to Be You and Breakable You. Milioti stayed committed to stage productions like Moscow Moscow Moscow Moscow Moscow Moscow and After The Blast.
